You might want to look up the loading values and muzzle velocities. In some cases you can hot load a .45 Colt near the .44 magnums. But .45 Colt is more near the .44 special in average loading. Take a look at a reloading book and you'll see the difference.

More powerfull is all over the place as is using recoil to judge power. If you are going to judge "power" in any useful apples to apples way you need to compare ftlbs of energy with comparable weight bullets.

Recoil can be hugely deceptive depending on the gun firing the cartridges in question. A scandium 357 with full power loads would likely recoil harder than most any full size .44/.45 just because of the gun's extremely light weight.

.45 Colt, if used in a strong frame, can do everything the .44 mag can do at lower pressures (or shorter barrel length with equal pressures).

Here's a good read on the subject:

ETA: yes, in the standard loading, they are a hair more powerful than .45acp.

P.S. Blackhawks in .45 Colt are fun.

I believe the 45 has more water capacity than the 44mag-same case length and a .429 compared to a .454 dimension
My Uncle reloads both for a older contender
The 44 loads are quite hot in recoil
the 45colt loads are almost rude

Yep. I definitely found the top of my comfort level before I found the top pressure level my Blackhawk could handle.

The 45 Colt has been around longer & they have to allow for the older guns out there. Yes you could load it up if you followed some rules & used a strong & modern gun.

Hodgdon's site has the following as the hottest loads in the bullet weights given and the pressure:

    44 Magnum
    240gr-1582fps @ 38,100 CUP
    300gr-1325 @ 38,800
    325gr-1368 @ 38,100

45LC (Ruger, Freedom Arms and Contener only, these are NOT the "standard" pressure loads)
    240gr-1532 @ 30,000
    300gr-1203 @ 29,800
    325gr-1266 @ 27,400

At the three bullet weights the .44 is 50, 122 & 102fps faster respectively.

What were the test barrel lengths? Doesn't mean much without that info.

The .454 Casull cartridge is sort of a .45 Colt Magnum, akin to the .44 Magnum's relationship to the .44 Special. The Casull case is lengthened so that they will not chamber in an old SAA or something, and blow the gun up. A handloader with a Ruger or Freedom Arms revolver in .45 Colt can load up some very potent rounds that out gun the .44 Magnum.

Mostly right but the 44 Special was designed with smokeless powder in mind but was made longer than the 44 Russian to prevent it from being put in the older weaker revolvers.

    Depending on the gun...

And don't go by reloading manuals as they tend to be very conservative..

The 45 Colt has the potential to be loaded far more powerfully than the 44 magnum.

Ross Seyfried and John Linebaugh have both written extensively on this subject.

In specially made five shot revolvers, the 45 Colt can be loaded right up there with a 454 casull

    True!
And guns like Ruger are built heavy and can handle it but the casing is a different story.

If you look at a 45LC casing you will see that it is thin for such a large caliber and if loaded really hot it will crack.
The hotter you load it the less times you can reuse it

When loaded heavy in the appropriate revolver, the 45Colt can actually be stronger than the 44mag.
