Not that it's particulary germane to the article, but with specific reference to your title, who says America hasn't always been divided?

I'm not sure if you believe there was a time when Americans were all united under a banner if homogenous principles and sang "Kumbaya".

Sort of reminds me of people that wax nostalgic over a time when women stayed home and knew their place.

Divided? It isn't really ... unless you mean divided between the ignorant dolts vs. the sane? It is both an extremely simple ... yet complicated answer (in the insidiousness of the concept). In short though ... powerful, smart, intelligent people and groups inciting and using ignorant and less well read people as puppets in their effort to hold/gain/regain power and influence. We are certainly in the midst of this type of scenario NOW.

... and WTF is the "Christian Flag".

obviously there has always been division. but it seems to have really grown in the past decade as society fractured and was divided into smaller and smaller special interests

That's my response as well. If anything, it is less divided than ever.

The Christian flag is white, with the upper left hand corner blue. A red cross is located in the blue field. We have several at church. I think they started to be used early last century.

If I could only figure out how to insert a large image instead of a thumbnail, I would put in an example.

Are we divided? Sure we are. But the chasm has always been there; rich-poor, government-non, blacks-whites, Texans-nonTexans. Is it worse now than before? Maybe in some regards, but as Gamer Girl mentioned, that Civil War was pretty bloody and violent!

What outcome do you expect when half the country loses half their earnings to pay for everything, and close to half pays nothing while consuming everything?

We've got a political party dedicated to dependency and handouts, and another party that can't grow the balls to take consistent, principled opposition to gravy train politics.

We have always been divided and always will. Where there are two or more people gathered there will be a difference of opinion.

I am convinced, however, that today boils down to two camps: Those who see the world as it is and those who see the world as they wish it could be (but never can be). Conservatives see the world and people as they are - a place in which evil exist and will never be perfect. Progressives/liberals see the world as they wish it could be. Their starting premise is that people are inherently good or at the very least nuetral and you can make the world "perfect" if you just try hard enough. Because their starting points are different they will never end up with the same conclusions or at the same point and always be at odd with one another.

stop watching so much FOX NEWS and go talk to your neighbors, see how divided we really are.

we are all in this together.
    I personally don't subscribe to cable/satelite.

The struggle has always been between the haves and the have-nots.

Because about half of the people in my country do not pay taxes, they are generally my enemies. There are only a few exceptions.

I do not seek to make peace with them, but to destroy them.

And to try to keep some of what I have. Maybe even get more.
