My dog got sick yesterday and threw up a few times. I was able to get the majority out, but there is still a discoloration. How does everyone get stains out of their carpet?

Damn, I came in here thinking I was aiding in a murder cover up.

Spot shot, DAB do not rub the stain at first. Lots of soapy water.

Steam cleaner works great. Rug Doctor? That's always worked the best for me. I probably wouldn't rent one to do just one spot though. I'd go ahead and do the whole house, or maybe the vehicles. Soap, water, and a shop vac is another option that works pretty good.

Well, it's like 4 spots, but still may not be worth the price. My moms got a shop vac. Guess I'll try that.

Vinegar works great. Add a tiny (as in a drop) of dish soap. Rinse & repeat the rinse. If you leave the soap, it will attract dirt.

There was a black & decker handheld steam vacuum that was amazing! It probably worked too well, so they don't sell it anymore. Now, it's just scrubbing in some Resolve and a floor steamer. My long term plan, keep the pets, get rid of the carpets. :)

I always use hot water with soap and I never seem to get all the soap up. It'll look good then start foaming if I scrub more. Maybe I put too much. I'll try the vinegar and if that fails, I'll get the shop vac. Do you use all vinegar or add it into the water?

    I like my carpet. :(
Buut, I love my dog. When my fiancé and I were looking for a home she was insistent (along with her entire family) on no carpet because they've always had dogs. But I wanted it, so she said I have to clean it.

Either way. Depends on how bad the stain is I guess. I keep a small spray bottle of about 50/50 water/vinegar but if I thought that wouldn't do the trick, I may use it stronger.

Yes, the soap can be counter-productive if you can't get it all out. Again, a drop in maybe a quart of water. Start with the water with soap and then go to the vinegar. It's OK to leave the vinegar in your carpets.

If you have pets and carpet, you need one of these:

We have a steam cleaner that we got from Sams Club.

However I've found most stains come out with a warm cloth and Shout (laundry stain remover). Even when I use a steam cleaner, I pre-treat the stains with Shout.

Man, I forgot how much I love vinegar. I used to use it for everything and got away from it for some reason. I just cleaned all 4 spots and I'm pretty sure they are okay now. I'll just have to wait until they are completely dry to be sure. Thanks everyone! :)

I am lazy. I never figured out how to clean carpet.

I ripped every shred of it out of my house and installed hard surface flooring everywhere.

    10,000 x easier to maintain.

Edit: For my wife, there are small throw rugs in strategic places. In the bedroom near the bed so she can step on that before putting on her slippers. In the bathroom. When they get dirty, we throw them in the washer. When they get NASTY, we throw them away.
