I've been in the customizing mood lately.

Is there an easy way to change the color of the Start Button in XP? I'm aware you can change the text, picture, and tooltip using Resource Hacker but I don't know how to change the color.

Do you have to use something like StyleXP or something similar? If you do, what is the best program like that to use that doesn't suck up alot of resources? I'm a little short on RAM at the moment.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Here's a pic of my desktop now. Still got a long way to go.

I am a neat freak when it comes to my desktop.

You can delete about 12 icons from your desktop.
Most files will open up the default program anyway.

Also you have them on your tool bar at the bottom.

Yeah, tell me about it. I'm either going to make the taskbar wider and put all the programs in a quick launch there or make the quick launch bar go up the left side if the screen.

I was also looking into objectdock too.

Hey, how do you get that text on the right side showing the system processes and whatnot to show up? Kind of neat. Is it a program or some setting Win XP has?

i have folders on my desktop on my windows computer named "stuff off of desktop 1" and "stuff off of desktop 2", etc.

everytime my screen fills up, i move most of the stuff into a folder.

    you'd hate to see it.:)

Haha.... I'm glad I'm not the only one that does that..... I have a folder on my desktop called "Desktop" for all the crap that I have but don't want to delete and don't know where to put. :)

It's actually a program caller CoolMon. Here's their website http://www.coolmon.org/. It's pretty straight forward to get all the info you want up and running. I took that screenshot about 2 hours after I downloaded Coolmon. After that I got it to display the weather from weather underground.

The only thing I don't like about coolmon is that it doesn't display graphs or images. I downloaded this other program, Samurize, earlier today and it does everthing coolmon does and more. I'm still working on it, but I'll be sure to post a shot of it when I'm close to done.

A little FYI for those who want to change their start button text. The g4techtv guide is the easiest to do/us, but where it says to reboot to safe mode w/ command prompt so you can overwrite explorer.exe with the hacked one, you don't have to. Just open a command prompt window (type cmd in the "run" box) then ctrl+alt+del and end the explorer.exe process. Copy over the file in the command prompt then type "explorer" to restart explorer. No reboot necessary. :)

Thanks MasterofPuppets. I'm going to try it out.

I've been playing around with samurize and I finally got something I kind of like. It's not close to done, but you can get an idea of what it does compared to coolmon.

I want to do a calendar and weather, but I'm starting to run a little low on memory. I'm probably going to grab another stick next week.

Here's a screenshot for those who are interested.

Thanks again for the help everyone.

When the Amiga computer was in it's heyday thier was a similar program that did the same thing(display processes and disk space). Unfortunately the name escapes me.
