I have a inlaw that we don't know if he is a Eagle Scout. That was a requirement for a deal he had with my FIL. (Who has passed). I want to respect his wishes. (No he doesn't get check mark for trustworthy)

    What was the deal?

That is a big deal to scouts, probably less than 5% ever get it. Tell him to show you his medal and badge, otherwise be suspicious.

Actually, only about 2% of Boy Scouts ever make Eagle.

Isn't there a online list? I can only find lists of Eagle Scouts who became famous, did something noteworthy...
If he finished it he gets something promised to him by FIL. If he didn't he does not. I prefer knowing truth going in. It's easier if you catch a person early...

There's also the National Eagle Scout Association. Not sure if all Eagle Scouts are NESA members, though.

Wouldn't be new able to prove that he is an Eagle Scout with a document or something?

Yes, but certificates can be faked and Eagle Scout medals can be bought online. Best to independently verify his status with the BSA or NESA.

There is no national list. Records will be at the local council the boy was in when he received his Eagle. I don’t think they will release those records to anyone except the person who earned the Eagle or to authorized representatives of the unit (troop, team etc) that the boy was in. Because the boy was a minor when he earned it.

I had numerous battles with parents who moved into the local troop from out of state. They had not kept records of the boys advancement through the ranks and I had no access to any national data base. They assumed I did.

So there is no record of who really passed all the qualifications for Eagle Scout? That's too bad. Those I know who did spent a lot of time, effort, should be proud of it. That someone could just claim they did... Bothers me.

Ah, good point about the boys being minors. Yeah, once you turn 18, game over for earning Eagle unless you get an extension by a special review board.

Really? You think there is a huge number of folks out there doing the "stolen valor" thing with fake Eagle Scout credentials?

You are not going to be able to check his status with BSA... And if he didn't pay to join NESA, he won't be part of that organization. Joining NESA is not a requirement for Eagle.

He should be able to show you his Eagle certificate, his badge, neckerchief, etc. If a recent recipient of the award, ask to see his Eagle work book.

AFAIK, NESA verifies the credentials of all members. If someone is a member of NESA, then you can be pretty damn sure they made Eagle. Of course, there are probably many men who made Eagle that have not joined NESA.

I never said that. I merely said that medals and credentials can be faked. I didn't comment on how widespread it may or may not be. Please don't put words in my mouth. Thank you.

Yes, NESA verifies credentials, but they don't make those records open to the public for review.
