Why do you assume it's only Harley riders? Many others ride on straight pipes or similar.Yamaha, Kawasaki, Ducati, Triumph, Honda..........not every handgun is a Glock, not every motorcycle is a Harley.
Oh yeah, since cagers don't do a good job looking out for bikers, the loud pipes makes our presence better known.

many cagers ride motorcycle, including me, about 300,000 miles, never road a loud bike and never needed one.

Few on the bikes you listed run straight pipes. Most have mufflers just loud ones. But loud mufflers are much quieter than no muffler.

Who in hell needs to warm up a bike for 20 minutes unless it's below zero?

I've been riding air cooled motorcycles for 55 years, in case you're wondering.

The same way that they get away with wearing skimpy non-DOT approved skid lids and brain bucket helmets; those who are supposed to enforce the law, don't.

My '09 Sportster wears Khrome Werks tapered slip ons, and they look like and are louder than stock, but are nowhere near obnoxious like straight pipes. This more open and less restricted exhaust in combination with a K&N 57-1125 intake and an auto tune MAP thanks to my Dynojet Powervision tuner, gets rid of the factory lean condition and allows the engine to run with the proper air/fuel ration for proper combustion, which allows for a quicker throttle response, a bit more power, and lower engine and exhaust temperatures.

Straight pipes on the other hand are only beneficial when running WOT. I've had RUB's go past me with their gay-arsed high dolluh open pipe fat tire beach bar wearin' Bourget's that literally hurt my chest. I guess they think they're really sumpthin'...

...but I think it's more like they're trying to compensate for something, LOL.

It doesn’t need 20 minutes. It should start up and run immediately.

It’s already here. The dudes that bought HDs around 1995-2005 can’t handle them now.

Next door neighbor spent about 25k on his and it sits in the garage. He’s asking 10k.

The used market is killing HDs new market.

And I’ll say that RVs and boats are now the preferred choice of expendable cash buying.

I can assure you, as a 'cager', we DO NOT hear the pipes until they're next to us on the highway. Not behind us...NEXT to us. There's such a thing as road noise, and just like a gun that's noisier when you're in front of it, motorcycles are noisier to those BEHIND it. The sound goes out the back, just like the exhaust. Not too hard to figure that out.

No need to assume. All one has to do is notice which bikes around you are loud. The vast majority of the loud ones are HDs.

So that’s why HD riders gun the engines at stop lights, to draw attention to their manly selves? LOL. Not drinking and driving will keep you safer than loud pipes will, but that never stops many fair weather riders from bar hopping on their bikes.

The old sheriff we had tried this, man hated loud motorcycles. They found out that getting an accurate DB measurement is a whole lot more involved than sticking a meter down by the exhaust pipe. One of the local lawyers was getting them all dismissed. After that they just wrote tickets for non DOT approved equipment.

Um. No. A Hayabusa will doesnt need 20 minutes to warm up oil. Of course never hammer any engine until warmed up, but there is no need to idle one for 20 minutes. Start it. If a cold day (say in the 40 or 50s) let it warm up 30 or 60 seconds and drive off.

Here is the exact wording from the owners manual:

"Move the chock lever to the "OFF" position approximately 30 seconds after the engine starts. It may be necessary to use the choke longer than 30 seconds in extremely cold weather"
