I love My 2008 Accord EX, it gets good mileage, it is plenty fast, it corners like a slot car, it is roomy, a great highway long distance driving vehicle that is very comfortable for long periods of time, and it is incredibly reliable.
BUT the keyfob barely works, after 18 months I switch keys with my wife due to mine working poorly, and hers is no better, I have replaced the Batteries in them 3 times (and in fact read the last pulled battery with a multi meter and it showed advertised voltage), when I hit the door unlock button (or any button) it is a crap shoot as to if it will do anything, sometimes if I tap it against my knife clip or pistol grip it will start working, but lately even that is failing.:dunno:
Has anyone else had this problem with thier Honda key if so how did you resolve it?

I have a 2003 Pilot. I had the exact same problem. Within a couple weeks after the first problem, mine quit working at all. My wife's didn't last but a couple weeks after that.

That was about two years ago.

I finally gave up and bought a replacement for about $60 at the dealership. There are aftermarket ones available, but they are as costly or even more.

So far, the replacement has worked great.

Put the metal part of the key to your chin, and open your mouth as you are hitting the button.

Seriously, it works for a lot of fobs.

Oddly enough I have had some luck when tapping my head with it

Funny how that works. My works fine, but I use that technique to extend the range. What's up with that?

I also can almost double my range holding the fob to my head (mouth closed though)

I have the 2008 Honda Accord Coupe. I have NOT had this problem and I'm wondering why you are. How many miles have you got on your car and is yours the coupe or the sedan (both were available as EX models)?

I do need to advise you of something that happened to me a few weeks ago that you really need to be aware of as I took my car in to Honda for it. It could potentially save you serious bucks. Please PM me.

With my key I am not ever seeing the led light up when pushing the buttons
Steve0853 did you have to replace the whole key or just the guts?

When you replaced the battery did you clean the electrical contacts with a pencil eraser? If the contacts are not gold plated you might have some mild corrosion on the contacts.

Key and auto unlock fob are separate on the 2003 models. I had to replace the fob.

Edit to add: My fob doesn't have an LED light.

sounds to me like the battery is loose. Make sure the metal prongs around the battery are holding the battery tight. Also, try putting a shim (slim piece of plastic or a folded piece of paper) in-between the battery and the part of the case that screws down on top of the battery.

I would bet the farm its a loose battery.

    windows tinted?

Modern window film is metalized and can affect the reception of certain RF frequencies.

    Live near large radio antennas?

A local lake and State park here in Cedar Hill has a parking lot with a lot of unlocked cars in it... because the huge antenna field for local radio stations blocks the RF almost completely.

The ability to hit the panic button while starting the car is a real suck feature as well, at least in the 2009s and 2010s.

This actually does work, but I don't have to open my mouth. Two key fobs on a '99 Honda CR-V still going strong. They're so worn that you can't even see the markings on the buttons anymore. Can't even remember the last time I changed the battery in one...

OP- The car has given you years of dependability and reliability. Honda's are great investments, I would just splurge and get the new fobs and be done with the headache.

I have the same car, only difference is mine is an 09. I have the same issues with mine that you are having. I have to make sure that I push the button (all the way down). This seems to help. I am interested in the post about the recall however. I will check with my dealer.

    18 months = "years"?
