Surprisingly yes, it's illegal in Alabama.

Wow, even in Utah it is okay to brew beer at home. I have several friends that make their own.

I used to frequent his Atlanta store. Nice people and a nice store. I hope it ends well for them.

I didn't know making beer at home was illegal in Alabama. Makes me want to try it myself here in Georgia while I still can, but it looks like an expensive hobby to me.

What I don't understand is, assuming the store owners know the AL law against homebrewing, why would they open a store there? :dunno:

OK, so it may be little different from operating a head shop in a state that outlaws paraphernalia, but I don't understand that either.

Stupid law, I am curious what the rationale for banning the fermenting of barley water at home could possibly be.

I remember reading that Dogfish Brewery in Deleware had some issue because it was illegal to operate a brewpub in Delaware, they worked to get the laws changed and became an excellent craft brewery.

Maybe they thought that local law enforcement wouldn't bother harassing a local business for selling bags of barley grain and hops, just because there is an old prohibition era law on the books allowing them to arrest you for that.

It's not the kind of business that attracts the scum of society or anything.

Looks like they didn't get some needed ATF paperwork filled out.

It's a loophole, which unless the "federalies" find a judge without a pulse or a clue on their side of things, IMHO, a first year law student to be able to get the fed's case thrown out lock, stock, and barrel. Again, it all rest on the judge's shoulders though.

It is illegal to brew beer at home in Ala., but it is NOT illegal to sell brewing equipment in Ala. (i.e., not yet anyway). See the loophole?

There is another beer and wine making shop on the other side of town; I should know as I was there yesterday! It sounds like the State ABC folks,(most of whom have alot in common with the Federal ABC folks-who brought you Waco and Ruby Ridge),were trying to get some cheap publicity.

Good thing thing Alabama had these fearsome code enforcer sheepdogs on their side to keep the violent beer criminals at bay. They actually ran into the danger of these hops and grains, not away! Liberty be damned, so long as they all got home safe.

I thought that it was legal, in Alabama, but I was wrong about that. Funny thing is, the continuing education department of Auburn's Montgomery campus had a home-brew course a few years ago!

I know of several people who do this, including a lawyer and a professor at Auburn's Montgomery campus!

Nifty video of some of Alabama's idjit legislators in the statehouse debating the bill. NOTE: Alvin Holmes is Alabama's leading moron in the legislature.

So they get the charged reduced to "criminal facilitation" of illegal brewing?

I have been looking to get into a healthier lifestyle. I might need to get some of that Chivas Regal that's stamped and healthy.

There will be some start up costs, but you can usually get started for about $50 to $100 for the cheaper sets using plastic buckets as opposed to glass carboys.

Can also save a few bucks on bottles by reusing the ones you drink.

After that it's just a matter of ingredients...in my area, ready made stuff was about $20 to $30 which made about 5 gallons of beer.

Compared to most hobbies, it is a very cheap one. Of course this depends on how big a drinker you are and how crazy you want to go with it...kegerators, CO2, etc.
