    THE very house? No way.

But I would build on the vacant lot as long as I could see results from ground penetrating radar showing there was absolutely no bodies buried on the property.

No way. First of several downsides: you'd have trouble reselling it for anything close to what you paid, unless some rich weirdo really wanted it.

In a sane world, the state of ILL-inois would PAY YOU to acquire that land and make something good out of it.

When I was a D.C.-based LEO, certain govt. entities offered something like $20K to any LEO who would buy a distressed (repo-ed) house in the D.C. limits, and live there for at least 3 or 5 years. The theory was that it would reduce crime in that neighborhood, and therefore worth the bribe to the LEO to live there.

The only way I'd live there would be for someone to pay ME to live there. That way I could hire a retainer of routine spiritual exorcists to come by every full moon to do their thing. The horror that occurred there has put a stain on that land. It pays to do research on where you live to avoid calamitous events like floods, routine forest fires, power outages and murder and mayhem histories.

Good advice. Fact is some of us may be living on land where any number of terrible things happened over the years. The good news is we just don't know about it. Ignorance is bliss.

Years ago we were selling a large industrial property just outside Birmingham England. The specific parcel of land was undeveloped and used as a security and noise barrier. After the business was restructured we put the property up for sale / development.
Found a buyer. Because the documentation in England goes back centuries the records are substantial.
Turns out that specific track of land was used as a bubonic plague burial pit in the 14th century.
Never sold the property, no one will buy a bubonic plague burial pit....... Ever.

Put asphalt over it and made it a parking lot.

If for whatever reasons I wanted to live there the lands history would mean nothing to me. I don't believe in nor have ever seen ghosts, poltergeists, disembodied spirits or any other voodoo metaphysical mystical BS.

I know the guy that bought Bob Berdella's house in Kansas City. He bulldozed it and dug up the grounds and burned it all. I believe it is just a very flat lot now.
