I clicked on this thread to say "hell no" on the .308. I've seen a suburban idiot put a 110 grain Hornady TAP round (the "urban" load to minimize overpenetration) through the exterior wall and 3 rooms of his neighbor's house. I stayed for the Garand pics.
Really, a .223 carbine (16") is where it's at. Your typical SWAT entry team probably agrees. It has the virtue of soft recoil and it'll defeat soft body armor with typically LESS penetration of interior walls than a pistol round (it's counterintuitive but it's true). An AR-15 is great, but a Ruger Mini-14 has its charms (the wood-stocked ones look more "sporting").
