So a house down the street got torched. Seems mom was a hoarder. Kids hadn’t heard from mom in a few days and went to check on her. Found mom dead. Called authorities etc. and dealt with the body. Then the kids had the bright idea of just hauling the junk 10 feet into the yard, soaking it in gas or something then burning it instead of hauling it away. I did say only 10 feet into the yard. Neighbors think the kids just put the gas can in the living room. The fire next to the front door found the gas. Whole house went up in seconds.

Fire department showed up, quickly surveyed the fire and were ordered to fight it defensively. Do not enter. #1 it was a unpredictable hoard. Do not enter. There was ammunition going off. Do not enter. #3 unknown flammable liquid inside. Do not enter.

Total loss and no one seems to know who is taking responsibility for the mess. Neighbors can’t find the kids or get any answers. Just a burned out shell for the last six weeks.

    Idiots.

Sandy, Utah. Six weeks ago. I knew about the fire but only got details today.

I see, so no ammo or flammable liquids in the house. OK.

Just don’t burn a pile of trash on the front steps with an open can of gas in the living room. I am serious. The initial fire is right outside the front of the house.

No, I don't have any plans to do that. But not sure how that ties into the ammo and other flammable liquids, and the ammo "going off".

    You don’t?

Idiot Kids lit the house on fire. Fire fighters couldn’t enter because of the hoard and ammo cooking off from the fire. The problem is not the ammo in the house. The problem is idiots trying to clear a hoarded house by burning the contents on the front lawn with the gas can they used placed in the living room.

So an insurance check and an empty lot for sale. Probably worth much more than they were going to get by trying to sell the house if they can dodge an arson conviction.

Insurance pays off the mortgage first. I occasionally deal with hoarding houses. I have never seen one that was not in a financial mess.

Yeah, that would be interesting to know.
The mortgage is likely less than the house is worth and certainly, based on condition, the replacement value is much more than it was worth. Plus they still have the lot.

I’m betting the family drama these knuckleheads can muster will be epic.

Sounds like a well thought out plan to me. Plausible deniability.
