I can't figure out how to size a pic for an avatar.
I have the software that came with my camera installed but it will only let me resize to a certain level (that is still too big to post)
    what am i doing wrong?

Download and install the spyware-free freeware image manipulation program, Irfanview. www.irfanview.com is the current site URL; current version is 3.95. Also get the "plugins" that go with it.

It's very, very easy to use. In order to resize your desired avatar, you would need only to open the image in Irfanview, and chose reside/resample from one of the drop-down menus, and do so. If you don't know exactly what numbers and such you need to tell it to resize to, or by, there's quicky resize buttons for like "half", "double" and such,, plus radio buttons for several common, standard dimensions. Then just look at the info about the image/file in the Image dropdown menu, first entry, "Image information".

Since I've never quite 'gotten' the whole pixel vs. other methods of measurement thing, I usually will find the image's entry Xp's 'file explorer' (right click start, then chose "explore), find the file and see what size it is as listed in 'explorer'.

It's really a pretty nifty program.

OK I d/l all the programs.
I can now size avatars but I can't post them here because it says "Not a valid JPEG or GIF"
Clicking on properties shows that the pic is a "BITMAP image"

    WTF!?!?!?!?!?!

when saving (file -> save) you should get a window opening with the option "save quality" and a sliding bar. lower the quality b/c the file size is too big (resolution is too high).

I use photoshop. I start with an image 100 x 100 and shrink the image I want to fit in the 100 x 100 window.

I then save for web and get it as close to 6k as I can.

:) Assuming that you have some sort of spyware protection on your computer use this excellent little program to cut down on the pixel count as well as reduce the size of a photo so that it will meet GT's criteria for avatars.

(If you ain't got adware or spyware protection, you shouldn't be fooling around with ANY free programs - OK!)

    http://www.myimager.com/

This cute little program is (almost) as useful as Photoshop; it's free - except for occasional adware issues - and with some practice you'll be able to: reduce, cut, crop, or resize just about any jpeg image.

I've got one for avatars, too. If you want it, let me know. ;)
