Since I took others advice from here and use Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird for my browser and email, I don't use anything else for protection, other than AVG FREE antivirus software.

The new SpyBot 1.3 is superb.
It deep-scans the registry, as it always does, but now it insists on doing a backup first.
Also, if you select the Tea Timer option, it will stop anything from installing on your PC, keep things from altering the Registry in any way, and prompt you for your authority to allow or deny those changes.
Be sure to Immunize following each update, and also set it to Block Silently.
It is, as I said, an excellent application.
