Hard to say. it appears to be a standard ( if there was such a thing) 58 cal civil war rifle musket. In addition to Springfield and harpers ferry, multiple contractors made similar pattern guns. I don’t see typical Springfield markings so suspect it is one of the contractors

Does it say Springfield anywhere?

It looks a lot like a Springfield Model 1861 but either another contractor or reworked.

No it actually does not say Springfield anywhere.
Caliber ?
Lots of rifles were imported by both sides during the Civil War.
First glance I thought it might be an Austrian Lorenz.

When I research it, the hammer looks Springfield (ish) but not the rest of the lockwork. ??
He is not sure if it's a 54 or 58 caliber.
Thanks for the input guys!
pretty good shape for it's age. i'm sure it has a story to tell, somewhere in there.

It does have that dreaded bayonet lug. 🤣

Rear sight looks like an 1861. Wonder if it might be a Bannerman rebuild or something akin.

I don't know what it is, but I can say that it is not a Springfield. It looks more like a European musket of some type, maybe Belgian, German or an amalgamation of various foreign and/or American arms ala Bannerman.

For comparison, here are a few pics of my 1861 Springfield:

I got this off of the family of the fellow that carried it in the War of Northern Aggression as a member of the 14th Connecticut Volunteers. The 14th Conn. were at many CW battles including Gettysburg.

Can you imagine one shot and then maybe bayonet time? Nasty. It would be terrifying actually I think. When i see old muskets like this sometimes I start thinking about what they would have been feeling using this weapon in actual combat.

New information.. Some of the markings on the barrel match Austrian markings. So really might be a Lorenz.

A little off topic... We found the 3 monuments to Connecticut units that are at Gettysburg battlefield. I think at least 2 of them had shamrocks on them?
OP I know it’s not necessarily cool to direct folks to other sites but you might consider asking at a couple of blackpowder/muzzleloader forums like at Black Powder or Firearm Identification or Smoke Pole - Blackpowder Forum
