I want that bag so badly that I can taste it. Problem is I think those buckles will be a PITA for day to day use.

Don't get caught with a length of chain in that satchel or you'll be put on double secret probation by the Dean.tom.

My immediate thought when I saw the pic. Too many complex buckles.

You'll never fit a grappling hook in there. Also, ditch the strap, it reads "man purse" all over it...

I so want it. An heirloom leather bag? Hell yeah. But I'm in and out of my bag so much that fussing with buckles would kill me.

I think I might need one. Which is the brand that "Your children will fight over when you die."?

I bought a very expensive, 4" thick leather briefcase at goodwill for $20. I tote it around for work full of manuals and tools. The more beat up it gets, the more I like it. And for some reason, I like that it has someone else's initials embossed into it.

If I get a fine satchel now, it should be sufficiently broken in by the time I die if I abuse it appropriately.

I have the saddleback briefcase; same as above but in dark coffee brown. It is really cool and I like to travel with it, however I used it for school for a while and it is really heavy. Once you get a laptop and some books in there, it will really start to bother your shoulder with the shoulder strap due to its weight. I'm not a small guy either. I ended up just using a normal double strap backpack and use the saddleback as a carry on mostly when I travel.

BTW the buckle (you only use the middle one usually) is not a pain at all. Once you get used to it, it is quite fast, much faster than opening a zippered opening. Kind of like how fast you can take off a nice broken in belt at the end of the day.

To save some money on the saddleback bags, look for "Dave's Deals" which are sometimes on the site and sometimes on ebay. I literally couldn't find the flaw on mine when I got it.

Also, you might want to consider the messenger bag if you'll mostly just be carrying a few books in it. It's probably lighter.

Keep talking. I really want one. I just can't get past the buckles.

I just watched the vid on his duffel bag. You gotta be kidding me. Some things NEED a zipper.

His luggage? No wheels? No way.

It's a gorgeous bag, for sure.

However, to my practiced college instructor eye, I think you'll have a tough time using it. Buckles are a pain, it's pretty heavy, and it's very limited in both how much you can carry (because of a single strap), and how much it compresses when you don't have much in it.

Also the lack of exterior pockets means you need to get into the main compartment to get ANYTHING.

While it's a wholly different category, here's the best school bag I know of:

    http://www.timbuk2.com/tb2/products/q-backpack/1876415

Slim, but lots of capacity, great computer slot, good pockets.

The best choice in messenger bags... though I miss the outside pockets.

And the backpack that seems to be the choice of about half the students I see - North Face Recon:

You're not going to find a good leather bag for any cheaper than that. In fact I'm surprised by the price of that one. My Tumi was 1.5x as much.
