I'm planning on buying a G17 through the GSSF membership and the store i am going to has the Gen 3 and Gen 4 both priced at $425.00. Should I get the 4 or the 3? Your personal preference and why.

I appreciate any feedback you can give.

Sorry, I don't have an opinion but I am facing the same decision and I am interested in others opinions as well. Pretty set on the G17 at this point.

Well, I prefer the Gen4 models--RTF grip, larger magazine catch, extra magazine (the Gen4s ship with three mags, vs. two for the Gen3s...) and the updated RSA.

Please note that there have been numerous posts regarding all kinds of failures with the Gen4 9X19 models, but I think that I've been fairly lucky with mine. The G26 still has the original RSA and older-style 336 ejector, too, and it works just fine. I checked, and all of mine have the "dipped" extractor, but all still work fine. I prefer shooting the heavier ammo like 124 and 147 gr. and haven't had any issues with either factory ammo, or my own loads.

I've recently purchased a couple of Apex Tactical extractors from Randy, and hope that I'll never have to use these on mine. I will have them in the spare parts toolkit, whenever mine ever decide to start performing erratically.

I bought a Gen 4 G17. I prefer the texture, mag release and dual recoil spring. Mine is also FDE. Few hundred rounds, no problems. Back straps are nice. If the Gen 3 and Gen 4 are the same price remember you get an extra mag with the Gen 4. But try both, some still prefer the Gen 3.

Another point to consider is that, among those who have had extraction/ejection problems with current production guns, the Gen4 models seem to be a bit more amenable to fixes.

As much as I've always liked the g17 I say hold off until ejection problems die down. I'd go with a Beretta 92fs in the mean time. .

I like the 92f and used to have one years ago but its just to awkward for concealed carry. I like the straight lines of the Glocks. I currently carry my G21 but want to reduce the weight and width, which the G17 will do. i had a G19 that i really liked but my finger was rubbing badly on the underside of the trigger guard and wasnt at all comfortable. On the G17 it doesnt rub nearly as bad. The Gen 4 is how i am leaning at the moment.

    For a G17 I'd go Gen 4 in a heartbeat.

last year with my GSSF i went Gen4. i have smaller hands so it was a simple choice. the texture is nicer on the 4 than the 3 for me.

To me the big issue would be the grip size and whether I needed (or wanted) a size a bit smaller or a bit larger than the standard grip size.

Yep , and I am a die hard Glock fan . If not then find an older Gen 3 or Gen 2 G17 .

I have a 3rd Gen G17, and I recommend it highly. The Gen 4s seem to have too many problems that Glock hasn't fixed yet.
