Must be able Surf Net, e-mail, Facebook, as this is what spouse wants.

    Min. Ram suggested.

    Min. Hard Drive suggested.

    What 14" Screen.

Point me toward deals, Brands, and it has to have Windows SEVEN.

I use a Mac she used PC at works, other wise it would be MAC...

Toshiba seems to be a popular brand laptop, but they aren't cheap. Any laptop will do what you want it to do.. Try looking at the Refurb Dell store, but I'm not sure if any of those have Win7 yet

Even to be able to run basic web apps, streaming video, etc. acceptably, you'll want a bare minimum of 2GB RAM, and a dual-core Intel processor.

The HD size depends on how much stuff you guys have or plan on putting on it.

I'm on my second Acer (gave the first one to my mom) and my biz partner bought one at my suggestion - all are running fine, no problems.

Before that, I was a hardcore Dell fan. Both make great machines.

I really like my Acer to... the only bad thing about it was 1gig of Ram and Vista, although I never booted it to see how bad it really was. :)

I can't imagine any Win7 Laptop having less than 2gigs of ram..and a Dual Core proc..eh, thats a matter of debate given the laptops limited needs.

    I have a Lenovo Thinkpad SL400 which as a 14" screen.
I bought it from the outlet.

New but from the outlet because it's last year's model or something. Real good price.

I do think Thinkpads are a step above.

You will find that Win 7 runs much better than Windows Vista and still slightly better than Windows XP on your laptop . . .

Head on out to NewEgg.com, TigerDirect.com, or CDW...

You can compare several brands for specs and cost... When you have the make and model you like, shop it out.

Windows 7 32bit you should go 2 to 3 Gigs of ram, Windows 7 64bit you can go 4 Gigs or more. Your sweetie probably will do fine on 2 or 3 Gigs... takes a monster app to pull more than that.

Processor? Pick the most horse power for the price. 2 Ghz should be pretty fine, but more is better and it's a buyer's market out there.

    Happy Shopping!

PS - Windows 7 Home versions won't join a Domain, only WorkGroups so do keep that in mind...

    Penny Pincher,

The link you gave is now $498. However, I got the exact same thing last Saturday in-store for $398. If folks don't mind going to Wally World, it might still pay off to walk in and check it out.

I had a 15" Compaq Presario w/XP for almost exactly 4 years to the date when my screen crapped out. So far, I'm content with the purchase. I am surprised how easy it has been to go from Win XP to Win 7.
