I have reached for my CCW twice. I didn't have to draw as the people knew I didn't reach into my carry area looking for a Snickers bar. Both times the potential trouble makers remembered urgent business in another part of the county and left before we could shake hands. Once, I drew fully and was taking up trigger tension when I realised it was a false alarm. I remember distinctly wishing I had a bigger gun as my sights came into my field of vision during the false alarm draw. It took a few seconds of hard breathing to get my heart slowed down that last time ,but that little KelTec P32 sure felt good in my hand. When you carry, carry every time you legally can and practice getting your gun into firing position from awkward angles and situations. Situations, even like the milque toast ones I was in, happen with nightmarish speed and without any warning. Practice and carry, carry, carry.

Oh, I almost forgot....Don't discuss that you carry with anyone. Some folks are just plain moronic about your packing heat. Carry a back-up gun and some extra ammo if possible. It won't be fun, chick, or comfortable, but if you need your gun, you just may need a 2nd one and some extra ammo. Just some thots from someone who has carried for over twenty years.

I am currently pursuing getting my ccw and I was curious if anyone has had to employ your ccw and draw and/or use your firearm.
Not even close. (carrying everywhere legal except the gym and the beach since 2005)

Ditto... in fact I have had to keep my ego in check. If someone wants my truck, they can have it. If they want my wallet that too. The only time I would ever considering drawing that gun is to protect my family or myself form something that I cant out run or out talk.

I haven't even put my hand on my pepper spray in the 6+ years I've been carrying.

There have been times I was glad to have it in my pocket, and times I was glad to have a pistol on my belt, but nothing of any consequence. That's the goal.

Just once, in Sep 05 at the local WalMart parking lot. A nasty pit bull leaped out of the neighboring car and came within an in or so of biting my throat. I had my G17 out and in its mouth in less than a second, but I didn't have to shoot it. It's window wasn't down far enough!

I drew against a large stray dog that was threatening to attack me. I yelled NO in my best command voice as I pointed the G26 at him. He stopped dead in his tracks and roamed off to pester someone else.

I doubt you will get many responses. I have had my home broken into in the past and I did have to draw my gun but I did not fire it. Either way I would rather not expand upon that incident. Many people will probably feel the same as their situations could be unresolved or there maybe legal ramifications.

since no one else has asked, i just have to ask what had you not positively identified when you drew and aimed your gun and started pulling the trigger?

You have to realize that if you carry a gun then there is a possibility of having to use it.
You need to get this straight in your mind soon if you are going to carry a gun.
I know a lot of people carry a gun and think that they'll more than likely never need it.
Great, and they are correct according to the stats.
But you must be mentally prepared to use your gun if and when the time comes that you have to draw it and use it.
This has to be part of your mindset. Not that you probably won't need it.
Isn't this why we choose to carry a gun? We may need it?
Think about this before you carry a gun;
Are you willing to take someone's life?
Are you willing to deal with the legalities afterwards?
Are you comfortable with the fact that if and when the time comes you will be able to draw your weapon and shoot someone?
It is not all range practice, dry firing, and quick drawing in front of the mirror.
It is a serious responsibility and has very serious moral implecations.
Just something for you to consider.

Be advised that if you DO draw but don't fire it, YOU must call the police and explain exactly what where and why you did what you did.
He who calls first generally wins that fight, because the perps WILL be calling too when they have cleaned their pants.
PS never had to draw from concealment, but did nearly have to shoot MY Pit lab mix(after he got maced by the meter reader.

1canvas,

I would be happy to. Many years ago I was a bonded courier, and delivered Rx to rest homes and hospitals. I carried almost 24/7 then. I was returning an an IV pump to the pharmacy warehouse. It was shady part of town, near midnight, one dark blustery night. A large tarp was covering the side of the building where construction work was being carried out. I was returning to my car, but still inside the dock area. I heard what I thought was feet running through gravel, and I drew, thinking someone was running up to the dock. I saw movement at the rolling door as my P32 came up, and something was entering the door. I don't remember drawing. I remember thinking someone was rushing me, and I saw movement from that area. The wind had caught the huge tarp, and it curled into the doorway just as my sights came level with it. The running through gravel sound was the tarp wrapping itself around the doorway. The whole matter, start to finish, was over within about four seconds. Remember, this was a pharmacy warehouse full of tens of thousands of dollars worth of Rx street salable drugs. Under the circumstances, would YOU have not drawn?

You're welcome.
