USAF Retired, 1972 - 1992. It was the best of times, a really great ride.
USAF Retired, 1975 - 2005. Ditto Glock45Lover.
But the Bush 41 Administration messed up when they did away with Strategic Air Command!
It doesn't get much cooler than this.
USAF Retired, 1977 - 1997. Carter years were bad, same as the slick willie knob job years.
And in EVERY conflict since then, we've needed and used strategic bombing.

1978-1999. I'd do it all again.
Should have built more.
We had to wait until they invented the aeroplane.
USAF Retired, USAF "Brat" (dad did 6 years US Army, 5 years USAAF 15 years USAF), S-I-L USAF Retired, B-I-L USAF Retired. Had a gentleman at church who enlisted on 18 Sep 1947 and retired as a CMSgt 1 Oct 1977
Uh, that was Merrill A. "Tony" McPeak. He distracted the old heads in the Air Force by changing the Air Force uniforms to look like airline uniforms while he pulled down MAC, TAC and SAC behind their backs. McPeak was a self-aggrandizing narcissist who thought he was a shoe-in for Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff. Fortunately, it didn't work out that way. I liked Dugan, his predecessor and Ron Fogleman, his successor. Fogleman's F-100 was shot down in Vietnam in 1968. He was rescued by clinging to an AH-1 Cobra helicopter that landed at the crash site!
Just to put the cherry on top - McPeak campaigned for Howard Dean's nomination, and when Dean withdrew, acted as an adviser for the John Kerry campaign. Ultimately, McPeak was co-chair of Barack Obama's 2008 presidential campaign.
Saved the best for last!
Ever since Cain killed Abel, mankind has been killing each other with bare hands, rocks, sticks, and eventually gunpowder. Had to wait for an advanced level of technology before we could kill each other with airplanes. And the USAF does it best. (Kind regards to my Navy friends; it takes a certain level of courage to land on a moving carrier!
Happy Birthday to you (Off we go)

You don't look a day over... what? 71?
Speaking of 71... Daughter is in town for some aerial convention... (She works ATC at NorCal Approach) met a couple of SR-71 jocks and got a snapshot with them and a signed photo or two...
