Hantavirus in Yosemite

    There was a police officer who contracted it and died in Washington state I believe. I do know in NJ the squirrels chipmunks and field mice can all carry it.

    Until several years ago, hantavirus was was relegated to the Four Corners area of New Mexico, and had no cure. It appears that it has spread, but now it is survivable.

    A college classmate of mine died in 1983 of this prior to the disease being known. It was after the disease later popped up in the Four Corners region that the CDC tested a blood sample they had from him that his actual cause of death was known. He was a really great guy and the los of his life is still mourned to this day.
