Why did two nations sharing the same island have such different economies?

    Haiti $780.00 income a year VS $9700.00 in D.R.

I hate to point this out, but is there really that much of a difference between $780 and $9700 in annual income? Either way, you're hella poor.

Yes, there is. When you are talking about subsistance, that is a helluva difference.

In that region the difference is massive. One is a good living the other is just above starvation.

D.R. has a strong economy and a fair standard of living.
Haiti is dead broke and buried with crime and corruption.

I have been traveling to Haiti since 2004 and I can tell you there is a huge difference between Haiti and the DR. People starve to death in Haiti.

Many times. I know the history and development of the U.S. and Mexico but I don't know the history of Haiti/D.M. My guess is the root of the problem goes back to european colonial times but what specifically happened to cause two sides of a small island to develop so differently?

you need to get out and see the isalnd.

    Haiti;

    no jobs
    no water
no land to grow on ( verylimiting )
no gov or what is the gov is piss poor
ground transporting is limiting to say the least
stuff we take for granted is not even a option
you have to trade and or bargin, just for salt and oil
they have barbancourt rum one of the best in the world imho
    sorry beaches

    DR

better jobs on in that market
more developed out of the two
    better look chicas
    better roads
    better schools
    place for supplies
they have barcelo rum , Dorado is my favorite
    better beachs

I'm been to both and they aren't even the same. It like trying to compare FL with Montana. Other than they are in the same country that's about it.

Haiti had and has an oppressive government, full of idiots and criminals going back to the days of PapaDoc Duvelier and his sons...after they were gone the Military there kept on with the culture or rape and robbery. Dominican Republic were and are lucky there is a bloody great mountain between them.
The Haitans are a subsistence culture and society and thus are like the middle ages in that they just exist...they denuded the forests there for wood to burn and leaves to eat and thus the earth falls in landslides and mudslides etc....not a nice place to be in a hurricane.

The DR is a bit like its siamese twin there but has a more stable government and has some tourist business.

The entire Caribbean region is an economic disaster nowadays ( except for Bermuda who seems to have kept its act together when it became a haven for off shore banking) as crime soars and tourists stay away.

I've been to a few of the Caribbean Islands a long time ago.(mid-80's) and after seeing things there it sure changed my idea about the whole "tropical island paradise" thing!:wow: Jamaica had to be the worst I saw as I never made it to Haiti or the DR while working on a tramp tanker. After seeing some of the stuff there, I was glad when we went to safer ports like Baltimore.

After visiting some of those places, figure I'll take my chances risking frost-bite and stay home in the winter.

Been to DR a couple times, Puerta Plata (sp?) area seemed nice. Haiti on the other hand, when approached from the sea you can literally smell it before you see it. Saw it from aboard my cutter while moored at the dock, that was about all I wanted to see.

Google Papa and Baby Doc Duvalier. They're probably the biggest reason in modern times. Actually Haiti has pretty much been all downhill since they slaughtered their French slave masters.
