If you're looking for something mainly to keep fingers away, North Harbor Freight has a cheap safe. It's nothing special but would be good for by the bed. I don't know that I would want to carry it around in a vehicle though.

If you do get it, just remember to remove the little sticker covering the phillips screw before trying to remove the cover plate. :) I "modified" mine to use the key all the time and removed the batteries for the push pad.

It's listed for $50 but my local store had it for $37.

I have similar circumstances, whereas I wanted to keep a pistola close at hand in the bedroom but I needed to keep said pistola safe from little fingers.

I bought (and would buy again) a model 4811-s handgun safe from handgunsafe.com.

    Pros:

    1) mechanical Simplex lock access (no crappy electronic keypad or key override) only. Fast access
    2) Tamper evident so you can tell if someone has been pressing the buttons
    3) Bulletproof -- these things are heavy duty.

    Cons:

    1) No light inside, which is not a big deal as I know exactly what's in it.
    2) More spendy than the ones you're considering currently.

Try handgunsafe.com . very good quality and very sturdy.
Why lock up your $500 gun in a $50 safe?

I found a great single gun safe with a simplex lock. 5 buttons--fast to open if you do it a lot (I open it daily, so it's like second nature to me). I may buy a few more to stock loaded guns in a few more places around the house. No batteries to mess with, and it keeps the gun out of little hands. It doesn't prevent an intruder stealing the box and taking it somewhere else to hack it open, but it precludes an intruder opening the box while in your house and using the gun on you. It's a little too tough for that.

    Here it is:
