Yep, at 0000 hours on Sunday August 23rd, I'll officially be a dick...

Got my orders yesterday, I'll be transferring from Patrol Div to CID. I think I'm ready for a change and looking forward to new challenges and opportunities. The wife is glad I won't be chasing the radio anymore and that I'll usually be home at night.

Congratulations; I did a couple of years in CID, and it was a good learning experience; it defintiely makes you a better overall cop, in terms of paying more attention to the small details of a case; when /if you ever rotate back ot Patrol, your cases will be much tighter, and much better....

At your agency is that a lateral, or is a promotion, with a raise, etc?

    Thanks!

It's a lateral. Hourly pay rate stays the same, but you get a take home car and OT based on call outs, etc definitely works out to be a bit of a raise.

It's acutally good that it's a lateral; (that's how all the spcialized unit postings are at our agency) it gives you the option to move into a different position or bacl to Patrol with no loss of pay or rank or stigma....

At 26 years, I am on my 5th (and final ) trip through Patrol, and while I enjoyed all of my other jobs, I have found that having done a lot fo other things, I can now truly appreciate the simplicity of the Patrol mission, it's "every day is a clean slate" aspects, and the feeling that it's where the rubber really meets the road.

Enjoy your new job, and make the absolute most of it; learn, every day, and never, ever, forget where you came from...

    Congratulations! Persons or property?

Even though we're always built up in patrol with terms like "patrol is the tip of the spear" and the "face of the agency", it is still entry level into law enforcement. Just like in TV shows where patrol officers are looked at as gophers and "uniforms", the detectives get the respect.

With that respect comes the responsibility and duty to perform at a higher level. Hopefully you will get tons of training and experience to assist with that.

Congrats! You will get more respect but a lot of the older guys will still make you earn it. Learn and dont forget the patrol guys help you out a ton. When we needed an ID from surveillance, typically a patrol guy knew who it was. Keep good notes.

Ours was a lateral move so I second the ability to switch back to patrol if you want. If you have any questions let us know.

    Congratulations!

The only thing I would say is, as you proceed, please remember where you came from... I have experienced detectives who have forgotten that. When I call you, it's because I have not enough people to do too much work, with little if any of the tools or training that is needed.

"Well, I CAN come out, but am I really going to do anything you can't?"

    Please never say this. :)

If the "gophers and uniforms" call, we're not just trying to avoid the work. We really don't have the tools or the advanced training you (hopefully) have, and we really do have calls for service stacking up exponentially. But we do know enough to recognize a crime scene that is going to need very careful and considered processing and collection over an extended period, otherwise we wouldn't have called...

    Enjoy the new challenges!

    Congrats.

Very, very quickly you'll start cursing your former co-workers in patrol for their lousy report taking/writing skills and/or crime classification skills. :)

Seriously, patrol and plainclothes cops can be very, very useful. Treat them right and when they help you break a case, share the glory. Praise in public, such as during their roll call.

Oh yeah, buy yourself a rolodex. You'll find that a rolodex of good contacts is worth its weight in gold, many times over!
