I imagine some East-coasters are already up at 5:00 AM (2:00 PST); you wouldn't want to interrupt their GT-morning-coffee-surf, would you? :)

I'm on GT most nights from about 2:30 AM Eastern to 5:00 AM Eastern, and from the user's list on GTs first page, I think Eric hit the slowest time pretty close.

Well, okay, maybe not (at least on a Monday night/Tuesday morning). I just randomly checked as I bounced around the site tonight (I see you were still here most of this time, Gudel):

    3:41 AM -- 142
    3:45 AM -- 137
    3:50 AM -- 133
3:52 AM -- Site closed for maintenance
4:07 AM -- Site reopened (this is when I found it reopened; it may have been open a few minutes before this, but I was surfing elsewhere)
    4:07 AM -- 133 users
    4:09 AM -- 121 users
    4:16 AM -- 115
    4:19 AM -- 97

For God's sake, it's only a 15 minute backup. Go take a crap and when you come back all will be well. :)

The problem here is that the local database backup is by far the quickest part of the total operation. Once the database is backed up locally, the backup file is copied to another machine. The backup file is enormous and the transfer takes quite a while. The transfer doesn't slow down the database server much at all, but the transfer eats up a lot of bandwidth. I have to time things so that the backup AND the transfer happen at as slow a time as possible. I hope this makes my decision make a little more sense to everyone. Eric

Eric, thanks for taking the time to explain the process.

Darn it, it happened again. Despite my best efforts to the contrary, I learn something new every day...:)
