I didn't shoot a single match last year...not even Mobile. It sucked hard. I'm off every other weekend now and if the schedule falls favorably (new assignment) I'll be off EVERY weekend.
Here's hoping '18 has more bang-bang in it.

The easiest way would be to join online. You should get a package in a couple of weeks. If you join for two years you will get a discount coupon for a pistol in your package.

Yep, that's called GSSF Indoor League. A series of three indoor matches with aggregate scores. A good way to get introduced to the sport... but nothing like an outdoor match. Still fun and still good for your skills practice/training!

Is there a description of the different group for registering?
    Amateur Civilian
    Amateur Guardian
    Amateur & Master Subcompact
    Amateur & Master Hvymetal
    Amateur & Master Competition
    Amateur & Master Unlimited
    Amateur & Master Major Sub
    Master Stock

There is some overlap with a number of pistols and curious to know why a person would choose one group over another.

GSSF has the descriptions in their rules (Section in the linked PDF below). You can only enter each division once, but you can use the same gun across multiple divisions if it fits.

    http://www.gssfonline.com/glockrpt/current_gssf_rules.pdf

Guardian is for Fire/Police/EMS/Military (and maybe Security?). Just a smaller playing field.

Heavy Metal is the large frame/caliber (.45/10mm).

Anything with optics (MOS, etc.) goes in Unlimited.

That Dayton OH one might not happen. Their in door and outdoor permits were pulled and only recently got their indoor permit back. They may not get the outdoor permit back (which is a shame as they appear to be getting the shaft from the local .gov and a developer/neighbor).

I've pruned the thread a bit. Be nice, guys. Think of the new folk that come here undecided about the stuff we enjoy.

    Ok, thanks.
This was going to be my next question.
I was curious if people had 2 different firearms and opted to do the same division but with different firearms.

If one plans to shoot a G21 there are 3 options.
    1. Amateur Civilian
    2. Amateur & Master Competition
    3. Master Stock

Being that "Master" is listed as a professional shooter, I can exclude "Master Stock".
This leaves either Option 1 or 2.
Option 1 seems to have a specific "Amateur" group.
Option 2 seems to lump Amateurs and Professionals (Master) together.

Why would a person opt for Option 2 over Option 1 if shooting something like a G21?

To explain further competition class breaks down the masters and amateur for awards, in fact all categories except am civilian am guardian and master stock ( and possibly unlimited which I can’t recall offhand)break down places and award for both.
You can also shoot a 21 in heavy metal. With the effort and expense of getting to matches ( many of us have fairly long drives hotel stays etc to get to matches ) the idea for most is to shoot multiple classes to get the most out of the weekend. So for instance I usually shoot a 26 and 42. So for me I run master ( already a master class shooter) and also enter pocket subcompact and competition so I shoot 4 categories. Some amateur shooters will shoot master stock as well just for the extra shooting anyway.
Since I am in the basement of master class or let’s say “barely master” even on my best day have little chance of placing in master class, but enjoy the shooting so much I do not enter with the expectation to win anything just have a good time

Do events/divisions “fill up” due to a limited number of openings? If not, is there’s any other advantage to registering far in advance as opposed to just a few weeks before an event?

Pre-registering is preferred to waiting to register at the match, much faster. There is no limit to the number entries. As long as you register by noon the Wednesday before the match you should be good. I wouldn't wait till the last minute though.
