GRAND JUNCTION (AP) - Authorities say a man died in an officer-involved shooting after police were called to a Grand Junction motel on a domestic disturbance report.

Police spokeswoman Kate Porras says the shooting occurred around 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Timbers Motel.

She says the victim died at the scene and no officers were injured.

The Daily Sentinel quoted witnesses as saying there were two gunshots followed by police ordering the man to "drop it." Police Chief John Camper told the paper that the man displayed a knife before he was shot.

Porras says the shooting is being investigated by a team of local law enforcement agencies as well as the district attorney's office.

I love the line "there were two gunshots followed by police ordering the man to "drop it."

I hope, for the cops sake, that the sequence of events is wrong!

We aren't required to give a warning if doing so would put us or someone else in real danger.

I just meant for the inevitable media frenzy, not the legality of the shooting.

    This.

Any warning you get proceeding a deadly force encounter is strictly a courtesy. :toilet:

Reminds me of one I heard many years ago. PD trying to stop a rash of purse snatchings, puts an officer in drag to troll for the robber. Walking down the street, swinging his purse, sure enough the bad guy grabs it and runs. Officer and bust team take the guy down. Interesting part is when the get to court. Officer testifies, "I was working undercover, in women's clothing, when the defendant ran up, grabbed my purse, and ran. I identified myself as an officer, ordered him to stop, and fired two warning shots. The defendant stopped and was taken into custody. ". The judge then called the defendant to the stand. Is that what happened? "Well your honor, here's how it went. I run up and grab the purse from some ugly old lady and ran. Next thing I know, I hear, BOOM, BOOM! GUESS WHO MUTHAF**CKA"

I heard of that story being an SFPD officer being robbed off duty saying "Suprise muther****er!" while blasting the mugger.

I would love to find out where that story REALLY came from and when.

It's been a tough year so far for LEO in Colorado. They've been blasting people, deservedly, on a regular basis all across the metro area, and now out west.

I just hope it's throughly investigated and is ruled a good shoot. Not a lot of facts available yet.

Reminds me of the story about the NYPD stakeout unit. They had a lot of shootings involving armed robbers.

One surviving robber took the stand and testified about a a robbery he pulled just before Christmas. The officers had already testified about the shooting and the suspect said, "Well it was kinda like the officers said except they didn't identify themselves, they just stepped out from a back room and said "Merry Christmas *************!!!!!!!! and started shooting."

And may be a fatal tactical blunder on the part of the warning party.

Our news tonight had several witnesses. They said cops told him to drop it and then fired. Still investigating.
