My Garmin is not getting any sat signal.

I figured it had gone chesticles-up, and decided to head to a Walmart to replace it. Of course, without a GPS, I couldn't find the closest one.

So, I knew where a Best Buy was, so I stopped in to buy another GPS unit, which would get me to Walmart to get a refund. At Best Buy, the sales guy said GPS wasn't working, and sure enough, none of his units were.

As I was talking to the sales guy, another customer carrying the same exact GPS unit I have walked up and said his wasn't working, and bought another one.

Is there a GPS outage I don't know about? Some other SHTF stuff going on I should know about? Solar flares? I checked Google news and couldn't find anything.

My iPhone knows exactly where I am. Like PINPOINT. So I doubt there is a sat outage.

Well, I checked Google news for Solar Flares, and sure enough there was a big solar flare a few days ago. The article said it would interfer with sat communications.

My GPS doesn't work, but the Sirius in my car does....weird.

When I was driving home from Florida a few weeks ago my car's GPS went haywire where 95 and 295 merge.

Maybe GPS satellites just hate VA?

    Mine seems to be working.

It tells me I am 47N and 7E (plus a bunch of numbers) but it seems about right to me.

Mine says I am moving in about a 2-3 block area. Haven't left the office.

Just keep in mind that the iPhone uses Assisted GPS (AGPS) so that may not be a confirmation. If you have a carrier signal, your location is likely being determined by triangulation, not GPS.

Not that well in THIS building. Freakin metal frame screws with my signal more than you can imagine. I can't "see" 3 antenna at any time. It knew, not only what building I was in, but what corner I was at.

Secret Service has been hitting the 'degrade' button. Seems most cub reporters have trouble tracking them to cheap motels when their iPhone GPS goes T.U. ;)

Had absolutely no problems with my GPS (Garmin) these last two days in SE Florida.

Maybe the problem is only in specific locations/other states.

I'm no GPS expert, just a consumer.

GPS RAIM Prediction tool used for aviation preflight planning. It predicts redundancy in addition to availability.

    Wiki explanation of RAIM.

CliffsNotes: RAIM is a feature built into certain aviation GPS units used to ensure error detection and redundancy from the GPS constellation. If RAIM is available, you can be assured of at least five individual satellites (SV) within view during that specific time period.

I don't ever remember losing actual GPS position information (outage) but I have had RAIM failures on rare occasions and for very short time periods. (The box is still navigating, and likely accurate, but has lost its ability to error-check itself) This simply requires the use of a backup navigation source, delay, or routing change for certain flight operations.

There are a lot of people in many industries who depend on GPS nowadays. It would be a pretty big deal to completely lose it. I don't know what could have caused your outage but I feel sure it would make the news if it was widespread. Maybe local military testing?

Well, if it fails completely, I should be all right. I don't have one. Haven't needed one, either.

My job would suck without one. I can't imagine going back to plotting routes. My AO is big.

I could do it, but I REALLY don't wanna :embarassed:

I'm in Kentucky, mine went haywire last Tuesday in a place it has worked before. Haven't used it since though.
