Nice looking rifle in a very interesting caliber. Definitely a round for reloaders/hand loaders.

It is essentially a AR-15 sized Magazine fed 45-70, I have not chrono'd anything but they run 1600-1800 fps according to quick loads (and other sources)
So far the recoil isnt to bad save for the Rem 300 HP I am pushing 41.5 grs of RL-7 on my best grouping load so far but I need to work from 41.1 to 41.4 to see what works best, but those do give a fair kick.

Is a setup like that for hunting? Or is it really for SOCOM?

My is setup for hunting but the Caliber was developed By Marty Ter Weeme for SOCOM applications stemming from action in Somalia where the 5.56 was taking multiple hits to drop aggressors.
It uses .458 caliber bullets (the same as 45-70, .458 win Mag. 460 wthby)
and weights run from 89 gr to 600.
There are sub sonic suppressed versions as well as FA suppressed and even FA SBR suppressed models out there
    Check out www.teppojutsu.com
The scope pictured is a Nikon Prostaff 3x9x50 in a Larue Tactical LT-104 mount that I use for load developement.
But I will be putting a Leupold Vari X 3 1.5X5X20 with Warne QD rings (that is the same Model scope I have on my .458 Win Mag).

This is the best group with the Remington 300 HP I believe it is starting to spread out so I will back it down and tune at 41.1 -41.4 grs RL-7

No idea what I'd do with one, and I don't reload, but very cool

Generally I Buy the Rifle and buy ammo to get the brass but at $52 and up a box ( of 20) that's a little expensive for this gun.
Brass runs about $.89 a piece and bullets run $.50-$1.10 a piece

I'm new to the AR but about 4 months ago I bought a 6920 for HD, coyote, and just plain fun. I have fell in love with this gun and next fall it will go with me to Colardo elk hunting. I will have to find a .458 upper between now and then. I don't believe the price for the ammo to be that bad, some of the higher end exotic hunting bullets are close to that. What I will be looking at is that it will be for strickly hunting, a box of ammo (after I get the scope set) could last me years. After I have a couple of boxes of empties then I will get my dies and start reloading. I think it is definetly worth it!

Go to www.teppojutsu.com Marty is THE Man for building the .458SOCOM. the Rock Rivers seem to be a little problematic due to overly tight chambers

Looks like they aren't taking orders. Hopefully something will change in the next few months.

And I thought a supressed .300 whisper was fun. I bet that thing supressed would be a hoot. Not to mention a good can could do double duty on a .45 ACP if one wanted.

I supplied the Spikes Upper receiver, Bolt Carrier Group, Troy TRX Rail, and DPMS lo Profile .961" gas block and $690 but that price also includes Redding .458 Reloading dies and a Case gage.
To this point I have 1400 ish in it. But I will be buying a Leupold Vari X III 1.5 x 5 and Warne Ultra High Rings which will run about $500 shipped
