Bought a 870 police magnum w/knoxx spec ops stock today. This is my first shot gun. Can't wait to shoot it this weekend.

    Congrats!

Make sure you think to keep the shotgun pulled into your shoulder while you fire it. Your shoulder will thank you.

    Recommendation:

Get a couple of different boxes of buck, and enough targets, to do a little patterning at indoor distances: 10, 15, 20, 30 FEET. Just to see how much (actually how little) the shot spreads.

And try a few slugs for distance: 50, 75, 100 YARDS

And see if you can dig up some low recoil

Thanks for the advice. I shot it this past weekend and enjoyed it. I found some remington managed recoil 00 buckshot. It didn't have very much recoil so I am going to try some different loads. Any reccomendations on a good HD load?

so let me get this straight - you didn't feel much recoil, so you want to try something stiffer? we need to talk...

For HD use the managed recoil 00. Low/no recoil (especially with that knoxx stock) means back on target fast - and that's what counts. It will all work at 25 feet, very very well.

If your gun patterns well with that Remington Managed Recoil load, it'd be a fine defensive load.

I hear you aceman. I know what you mean low recoil = back on target quickly. I will use this for HD because I like it's characteristics I am just curious to experience the recoil of the heaveir loads. I want to know how this shotgun feels with all different loads but will definately keep the management recoil as a prefference. I know my wife and daughter can handle this load.

I have decided on #1 buck for HD (sixteen pellets)

    Congrats on the acquisition!

Another tip about the SpecOps stock -- make sure you have your cheek at least 1 1/2 inches behind the bell of the stock. Otherwise, there's a possibility of getting a whack on the cheek from that part of the stock coming straight back.

I have SpecOps stocks on my NEF Pardner Protector and Mossberg 500 -- love the combination. :)

Anecdotally, I hear folks say they actually perceive a greater sense of recoil reduction from stouter loads than milder ones with the SpecOps. Might have something to do with the greater momentum of stiffer loads causing the spring mechanisms to react more aggressively.

Great choice on the police magnum as opposed to the express. I just picked up an 870 police max, traded out the speedfeed pistol grip stock for a speedfeed youth stock and it is now the best shotty I have ever owned. Have fun with yours.

Finally had a chance to post a pic. I put a sling on it but ended up taking it off. Any suggestions on a good light?
