Well, new to me. ;) one of the lenses on my 'want and need' list, as opposed to the 'dream' list(300 f2.8, 500 f4, 600 f4), has been a 300 f4.

one showed up on a Nikon forum that I frequent. got it for $475 shipped.  appears to be as advertised, "near mint" condition.

fired a couple test pics with it, so far, so good. can't wait to take it to the eagle's nest. ;)

also, this lens will come in very handy in my 'kids sports photography' gig in the works. ;)

if all goes as planned, I'll give it a workout tomorrow.

and, yes MK, the D80 is on hold. ;)

just got back from the nest. appears to be only one eaglet this year. there were three last year. ;)

probably a day or two before I post anything. got about 150 RAWs downloading as I type.

forgot to pack my 1.4 converter to test it, also. :steamed:

So you have an excuse to go back

We have six baby birdies in the greenhouse :hearts:

I actually moved this mommie bird's nest because she built it in a really bad spot, twice. I didn't know if she would follow but the next day she had an egg in it so she didn't mind too much. :)

You may have an eaglet but I can touch my baby birds

I have an excuse to go back allright, I screwed up! :steamed: :steamed:

prior to shooting, instead of lowering my ISO to 200, I did it backwards, and raised it to 800. I found out when I saw it on the exif data.

oh well, the important thing is that the lens performed well. if its this sharp at 800, I can't wait to see it at 200. ;)

heres the setup. the tree looks closer than it actually is. probably 75 yards away.

here's a (resized)full frame pic of the nest with the eaglet flapping his wings

actually, the body is only about 2" longer than my 80-200 2.8, but it is narrower.

MK, it's been shelved, for now.

the only thing that drew me to the D80 was a few extra features, not the 10mp. 6mp is plenty. but I do want to have two bodies, especially since I'll be shooting a lot of baseball and softball this summer. figured it would be better to have two bodies with similar controls. ;)

stopped in the local camera shop to pick up a different lens cap for the 300. they had one D50 body left. I asked the owner "how bad do you want to get rid of it?" the price she came back with was lower than I expected.

so, for less than I would have paid for a D80, I have acquired this great lens, and one of the few, new D50 bodies available.

Well, if you are happy with the D50 then more MPs doesn't really matter. I wouldn't spend the extra if it wasn't a pretty good upgrade either. The only things I would change about my XT are the lack of weathersealing (I like to shoot "at" bugs in the greenhouses) and have the ISO indicated on the display/meter-area along the bottom of the viewfinder.

Besides, you just can't beat good glass

    nice lens .great price.its a 1000 lens easy.the 2.8 nikkor 300 is a dream lens alreight.3 large brand new.ive seen a beater2.8 300 for 1800 buckaroonys.
    in reality with the 1.5 + crop you have a f4 450mm.Before digital a 450-500mm f4 would be 5 grand easy.
