Hope to find useful information here. I'm 70 and have been online since the beginning. Got a degree in Psychology when I was 48. Learned a few trade skills. Getting on in years and looking for a bit of personal protection advice. Man of few words.

    Welcome brother!
Are you looking for a home defense, or carrying the gun on you/in your car?
What's your experience level with firearms (collector, active shooter, casual owner, etc)?
I know others will jump in with additional questions, but I figured I'd get the comments going.

Thanks for all the welcomes. I actually have minimal training. Just shooting 22 rifles at target ranges as a kid. Getting kicked by a 12 gauge a few times. I have a long way to go, but will keep checking in when things progress.

Long ago & far away when I managed a gun shop, I always suggested people get a good revolver for home defense. Why? Because that's what I use. Why? Lots of options (in caliber, size, shape, capacity, finish) they're not ammo or shooter sensitive (there's no concern for underpowered ammo or that you're not holding the gun tight enough). Load it & lock it up (or however/wherever you choose to keep it) and it's always ready-no worrying about magazines or any of the extra stuff that come with semi-autos. Easy to use-pick it up, pull the trigger, it goes bang. Doesn't go bang? Pull the trigger again.
What I suggested to them, and what I personally keep loaded in my nightstand, is a S&W 686+ with a 4" barrel. You've got: all stainless steel for rust resistance, seven rounds of .38 special or .357 magnum, an almost infinite amount of grips available-size, shape, material-it's just a great gun.
I'm sure somebody will chime in & tell you something is a better choice. In fact, I really wish some other people would chime in other than just to say welcome...
