The local shop has a Bushmaster AR-15 for $975. It has a 16" barrel and a collapsing stock. Is this a good price or are there better deals to had if I look. I have searched Gunbroker and found nothing.

i think in CA the bushmaster you speak off is the cheapest AR15 in our market, i saw it on sale at a Turners and would have prolly purchased it if i didnt do the build up myself

i got all the info about legaly owning an AR15 from AmmoBros.com they are quite local to me and that is (IMO) the best place to pick up AR15 knowledge, parts and accessories

It has 2 screws that hold the 10 rd. magazine in the lower.

DO NOT REMOVE THE FIXED 1O ROUND MAGAZINE.
If you do so, without modifying the rifle, you just created an "assault weapon" and have committed a felony in CA.

You have to loaded the magazine by either opening up the upper reciever or loading it through the ejection port.

There are ways to have a magazine fed AR, but that requires the rifle to not have any "assault weapon" features on it.

In order to legally convert the Bushmaster AR you are talking about you need to first replace the extending stock with a fixed stock and remove the "flash suppressor". After you do those, you can removed the fixed 10 round magazine.

Also, you are limited to using 10 round magazines. Unless, you happened to own some higher capacity AR magazines prior to 01-01-2000.

At this time, I would recommed you keep the AR in a fixed magazine configuration due to some of CA DAs prosecuting people who own detachable magazine AR15s as "assault weapon" violations, even though the ARs are configured in ways that do fall in the "assault weapon" definition.

Go to www.calguns.net to learn more about legally owning an AR or AK in CA.

As others have chimed in and pointed out, generally removing the mag is illegal.

I should have been more specific and asked the question directly to the following:

The two screws and the 10 rounds are what makes your AR "legal"

Go back to calguns.net and read some more.

Then study what you've read and re-read it.

    Take notes and pay attention.

There is no quick and easy way to do it. That leads to things like "cool, I'll just take out two screws".

Think of it as homework with a no-fail option.

I guess I've been out of the loop...I thought Bushmaster was a listed rifle. Unless what you were looking at is a FAB10 with a sealed magwell...
I say just pick up a stripped lower and build it up yourself...get a bullet button too and then you can have your detachable mag.
I've seen some complete Stag rifles for under $900.
