    greetings all,

moving into an apartment in the fall, and I am thinking about biking to campus everyday instead of driving

two reasons really -- the main being I am trying to get in shape and biking to campus everyday would be good excercise. the second obviously to save on gas!

I'm not a small guy by any means -- about 6'1" and currently weighing about 280 (working on that -- was 310 6 weeks ago).

basically I am looking for a decent but (hopefully) inexpensive bike to ride a few miles a day on.

    thanks!

I just purchased a Trek 820 for $239 new. It is the only steel frame bike Trek has. Great bike.

Whatever you do, DO NOT buy a bike from Walmart or some cheesy sporting goods store. Half of them aren't even put together correctly.

Go to a real bike shop. Decide how much you want to spend ahead of time. Go in, tell them the type of riding you plan on doing, and that you have x amount of dollars to spend, and ask what's the best bike they can get you for that amount.

I'm into high end bikes and build up my own, so I can't recommend a specific model.

Trek, Specialized, Haro, GT, Jamis, KHS, Giant etc are all reputable companies. I always thought Specialized gave a great bang for the buck personally.

Exactly. My previous mtb, was purchased at Sports Authority. This time around I went to a bike shop and told them what I intended to do. Then they fit me. Here my previous bike's frame was too small for me. The bike shops do have something for everyone.

Get fitted at a store and buy a good bike.

well today I bought a Trek 820 and rode it around a little bit when I got home

the seat is the most uncomfortable thing ever invented!!

anyone have a recommendation on a more comfortable bike seat? I mean I could barely stay on this thing for 20 minutes my butt was hurting so much!

    thanks!

Brooks or Koobi, spendy, but worth it.

    I prefer Selle Italia.

A good saddle will run atleast $80+.

I thought the same thing at first too. But after I rode the bike a while, it is comfortable. Twenty mile trail rides are no problem.

Ride the same seat for a few weeks....your butt is very tender at first.

I ride a Giant Trance 3 Full Suspension.

A Specialized HardRock gets you into a good bike for about $400. The front fork is not that great, but can always upgrade that later.
