My wife and I just got back from the vet. We had to put down a good friend. Phil, the Siberian Husky, had ruptured a disk in his spine and had lost all control of his hind-quarters. Because of the amount of pain, and the very limited possibility of recovery, we choose to put him down.

We only had Phil for a year, but he had such a huge heart that the entire family fell deeply in love with him as soon as we saw him. We picked him up from Free Spirit Rescue in Harvard, Illinois. He had been living there for three years, and was roughly 5 years old at the time we adopted him. He had been the victim of abuse and neglect by his original owner, that is how he wound up at the rescue.

You couldn't have asked for a better dog/companion. Loving, helpful, playful, loved the kids and the crazy Great Dane/Doberman puppy we have.

Phil, you will be missed so very much.

    Egyas,

Sorry to hear of your loss. It has to be tough. I have a 14-year-old pug that is getting close, we just know it. He was here before our kids and it will be a difficult time when it comes.

It is so sad to lose these little guys. Our hearts go out to you and your family. It is so hard on the young ones. He really was a beautiful doggy.

I am truly sorry for your loss. I, myself, didn’t have my dog for very long when I had to put him down in January but I grew to love him more than some of my own family members. The hardest part is coming home to an empty house now.

Take comfort in knowing that you gave him the best possible home after being rescued from the original owner. Phil knew too or else he would not have reciprocated as he did with you and your family as a loving, helpful and playful companion.

Again, I’m sorry for your loss. You and your family are in my thoughts.

We still don;t know. The X-rays showed that he had MAJOR calcium growths on his spine, probably causing a lot of arthritis (sp?). The rupture is still a mystery. We think it happened while playing with the puppy (a 9 months old Great Dane/Doberman), and they play rough sometimes.

It sucks to have to put a dog down, but if they're suffering, it's the best thing to do...

We had a toy poodle who also had spurs on his spine. We had to put him down when he got to the point he was suffering. Hard to do, but sometimes it's the only choice for a beloved pet. I'm so sorry you are suffering. Your dog was beautiful.
