    Because Linus Torvalds got a way too ambitious when writing terminal emulator, the technology world was pushed ahead perhaps by decades. The world has been changed.

    He absolutely deserves this kind of recognition, even more so than the very-deserving Tim Berners-Lee (the recipient of this prize when it began). I would argue that Richard Stallman does, as well.

    What they created was not new, per say, but it was open, new, and good (thanks to their software engineering skills). Without those three people, it probably would have taken many more years for the tools we have to drive open and free communication to take hold.
