During our visit earlier this year to SE Arizona, we visited the mission at Tumacacori. It was the middle of the day, and this lady (Gloria) and her husband were giving a tortilla making demonstration. She was making the tortillas while he kept the wood fire going. They spoke only Spanish, but we found out through a person taking copious notes that Gloria was also considered a healer, and knew many plant-based remedies. The note taker was documenting all of Gloria's remedies. She also told us that Gloria had been invited to the Smithsonian at one time for the same purpose. No matter that I couldn't understand her, it was fascinating to watch her work, and the sample tortilla she gave me was excellent!
