I was doing some maintenance on the couple of Zippo lighters (flint, fuel, cotton) when it hit me - a 1911 is like a Zippo and a Glock is like a Bic Lighter.

Bic/Glock: low maintenance, dependable, daily carry, etc.

1911/Zippo: good looking, elegant, historical, accurate (-windproof at least), gotta wait for some parts, may require custom work, lots more parts, heavier!, etc.

    - Both deserve a place in your shelf/safe.

Now, if I can think up a Socratic answer to the 9mm vs. .45 ...

    That's a pretty good comparison.

I would have to agree with that. Even though I don't own a glock yet (Still trying to decide between buying a 3gen g19 or waiting till the 4gen comes out). I have shot both and say that sums up the difference nicely.

The only point I would disagree on is Bic are mostly disposable. A properly maintained Glock will last as long as a properly maintained 1911...

    I like it!

Of course I do disagree in that a bic is a disposable lighter and of course a Glock is FAR from disposable... But I like the overall comparison.

Now if my Glock could light up my Monticristo #4
I think the Glock as more of a Colibri

and a zippo you have to keep refilling, or keep putting money into it to keep it working, yeah like a 1911 especially a Kimber. Glock may be like a Bic, cheaper yes, but lights every time.

Usually I just roll my eyes at comparisons but this one is actually pretty good.

Don't go there man, just don't go there. Seriously. That debate always ends up with somebody losing an eye.

I like the comparison....I use to have a large collection of Zippos....first year to current. A burglary left me with out them. Use to have quite a few 1911's...sold them off.

I have Bics everywhere, fireplace-fire pit-wood stove at camp- Cigars.I also have my glocks everywhere :tongueout:

I've said this before many times and you're correct. Don't forget, BICS are as cheaply made as possible.

Now THERE is an idea! Someone needs to make a lighter out of a Glock shell.

:agree: The only handguns in my safe, besides a few odd wheel guns, are Glocks and 1911's.

I also like the analogy. I love 1911's and Glocks. As far as the previous post, EVERYTHING is made as cheaply as possible to acheive a given set of specifications. Thinking in terms of VERY long periods of time, a case could be made that a Glock could outlast a 1911. I've never seen a rusty Glock, but I've seen 1911'S that were rusted almost into a solid block.

Maybe 'generic' is a better word. But I like the comparison.

And I bet a badly maintained Glock will outlast a badly maintained 1911.

Depending upon the intent of the manufacturer, everything is made as cheaply as possible.

In 22 years, I've never had a Glock let me down. Most of my zippos were a PITA.

    Bics rule.

3decades of 1911,s and near 40 of them. I retired the 1911 platform and 45acp which does not have enough barricade ,car penetration. The glock is far better than the 1911 for a combat pistol. Every gun has its day and the 1911 is no longer the best choice today. Still its a good old pistol and round, but not the best.

    Zippos don't explode under pressure
