Hi I'm new to the forum but have stalked on here for a bit.

I have a glock 17 I love but want to make a couple mods to a couple areas. I ordered a Ghost Evo Elite kit I'm hoping will get rid of the trigger overtravel and maybe help my shots go straight instead of left at higher speed.

But the other mod I wanted to ask about is the grip. I find my support hand starts to slip out of grip after about 6 rds shooting quickly so I think I've settled on stippling it to hopefully improve that. What I'm wonder is, should I also do the trigger guard undercut and/or fingergroove removal? The idea of the triggerguatd undercut is appealing to help me get higher on the gun to mitigate recoil for faster shooting but seems like if I do that the fingergrooves will no longer line up. I currently find the fingergrooves comfortable because my fingers seem to line up fine with them. However if I do the undercut they no longer will and will probably need removed. Should I leave the frame geometry alone and just stipple it or should I do the undercut and fingergrooves removal?

Honestly, if I had to make those kind of changes to a gun, for it to be comfortable. I would look into a different gun that fit my hand better. If Talon grips and maybe a magazine pinky extension doesn't get it done, then me and that gun weren't meant to be. But that's just me. YMMV

I don't need all those mods to be comfortable. The glock actually is very comfortable as is in my hand and I've tried a large list of other pistols. I like the way the glock naturally points (grip angle), the low bore axis, the shape of the grip, the ease of cocking the slide, and even certain aspects of the trigger. I would prefer the trigger a little crisper and although I love the grip I find my hand sliding out of it over several rounds hence wanting to do the stippling. I figured while I'm at it maybe it's worth putting the trigger guard undercut in to raise my grip higher. Was just wanting some folks opinion especially those that have done it.

Instead of stippling the grip, which is permanent use grip tape. If you like that, then stipple the grip.

We are mostly Glock purists here. I use a Hogue sleeve with great success. I've seen great stippling work but don't understand permanently marring a gun. Same is true for undercutting the trigger guard or removing finger points. That's just me and I don't judge anyone for making such mods. It's your gun.

As for the Ghost mods, you should know that they all do not work as advertised and aren't always "drop in parts." Although I think OEM pull is fine, I've done trigger work for other folks with mixed results. Few liked the change but most ended up going back to OEM.

Mod/upgrade the shooter = free

Once done, he/she can pick up any handgun and shoot it well enough, without having to take it back to the worktable to add parts. Chasing mods only deepens the bad habits, and the denials.

Yeah I see all your points. How the heck do you keep a firm grip on this thing then? For instance I like to rest my supporting thumb on the frame to provide lateral support. Problem is everytime the gun recoils that finger slides off. I was thinking of stippling that area so I could dig in and keep my finger seated. I have long fingers. It's tough to keep them from sliding around.

Pay for some real classes (instructor) - leads to a fast ramp up in ability and skills that can then be practiced on the range into second nature. It's a life changing experience to do it right from the beginning and not drag around bad habits for 10 years before discovering your issues.

Trying to learn how to shoot from internet forum posters, is like trying to learn kungfu from you tube.

Thanks for the good suggestions. I think I'll look into some training. I did install the Ghost Evo Elite kit in my glock 17 this weekend and it make the gun MUCH better to shoot. Trigger is about same weight but the overtravel is essentially gone and reset a bit shorter. I had a much better time shooting straight instead of to the left and did much better shooting quickly. Probably won't do any other mods at this time

I used to have a similar issue when shooting. Always felt like my thumb was coming off the pistol.

Solution - forget about the thumbs.

Work on a 70% weak hand grip.
Thumbs barely touch grip - not needed.
Strong hands job is to allow trigger finger to move independently straight back.

Thanks for the response. I have tried the 70% support hang grip before. Lately I've been trying to just apply a lot of pressure with both hands to create a vice on the gun and it seems to be working better.

I've decided I probably won't stiple, undercut, or any of that stuff to my G17. I did install the Ghost Evo Elite connector and spring kit though and I have to say the difference was dramatic! I might have lightened the trigger slightly but its mostly the same weight which I like. However the overtravel is basically gone and this had an immediate result of straightening my POI. Like I am shooting dramatically better with this trigger kit than before. I know people have opinions on keeping things bone stock, but prior to this thread I've shoot several thousand rounds through my Glock and consistently had trouble shooting left if I achieve any sort of tempo and don't go painfully slow. I believe now that it was due to the overtravel. The shot breaks and all the weight of my finger sends the trigger back with no resistance slamming it to the rear position and causing the sights to wiggle slightly when dry firing. Now I can consistently dry fire, faster even, with no sight movement.

Otherwise I'm just going to keep practicing and I will probably seek out some instruction. I'm not a total newb. I've been shooting for years. But I also acknowledge openly I have much to learn. Taking my time I can put 15 shots within 3" at 12 yards. Most of the shots within 1.5" with a couple outliers from frankly getting tired holding the gun when shooting slow.
