I always wondered why someone wouldnt just put a piston in place of a gas tube....

They did it was called the AR-180A. Armalite was too late with the rifle and it failed to catch on. The AR-180a & B are sweet designs.

I plan to buy an AR-180B and not an AR15 based rifle when I can raise the funds. I will ask their custom shop to remove the scope base and mount and tap a thick enough plate the length of the upper reciever so I attach a Picatinny 1913 Rail. And request they put a ejection port cover on the AR-180B too.

The HK36 and 36C are based on the AR-180 gas piston/rod system.

The HKM4 looks real good!

A new gas system named the RHINO developed, marketed and died a few years ago. It used type of SKS/AK gas piston/rod assembly. It was too propritory but it worked like a charm however it failed to catch on.;P
Maybe it was before it's time.

IMHO, It is not likely the US will adopt this mod due to the NIH, Not Invented Here, syndrom. :(

Cool! Finally a glimmer of hope on reliability for the M16/M4 family.:)

I like it. Sign me up for a few 20" barrelled models.

I pray to the gun gods that H&K will come here and produce this.

Let's see, it took about FORTY Freakin' years to dump the stupid gas system and outfit the AR with a better bolt--and it took the Germans to do it. What is wrong with our own ordnance department.

If this short-stroke piston really works, they've managed to keep most of the good features of the AR and correct its Achilles heel. Bravo HK. I'd still like to see a better collapsible stock. The current version is not strong and has a lot of angles and projections to hang up on stuff.

"The elimination of the gas tube typical of the Stoner AR15/M16/M4 direct gas operating system means that the HKM4 will function normally even
if the weapon is fired full of water without first being drained.

To improve reliability, service life and operator safety during obstructed bore occurrences or after extreme extended firing sessions (>300 rounds) HK has produced its famous cold hammer forged barrel for the HKM4 in various lengths to include 10, 14.5, 16.5, and 20 inches.

The highest quality European steel is used in this unique manufacturing process producing a barrel that provides superior accuracy for greater than 20,000 rounds with minimal degradation. The goal of the program to offer an M4-style carbine that will fire 20,000 rounds without cleaning, lubrication, stoppages, or parts replacement has been realized in the development of the HKM4 Enhanced Carbine.

    In development
    - Monolithic upper receiver with integral Rail Adapter System
    - Improved surface finish, ambidextrous controls
    - Safety Blank Firing Adapter and live round excluder magazine
    - HK free-floating modular rail system
    - Integrated reflex sight with nested IR laser aimer and illuminator [this will be a huge cost savings over bolting on a bunch of aftermarket units]

Take a close look at that bolt:

I do wonder a bit about the new steel mags. Unless they're Tenifered, I bet they will rust. But if they stand up to banging the way AK mags do, and if the top mag lips don't deform, it's worth the extra weight and potential for rusting.

In this photo it does look like they've made some improvements to the collapsible stock. Adjust lever was changed. There's an ambi cheek pad of sorts. The back end was smoothed out some, and the buffer tube looks different:

That stock's either the Crane stock or the VLTor stock (aftermarket stocks, excellent designs......all made by former Specops guys pissed at the original collapsible stock.

I think this HK M4 is a definite (cheaper!) contender for replacing the M4 without going to the XM8.

I believe the stock holds two AA batteries on each side to power the optics.

Actually it turns out its just a storage compartment for CR123A batteries.

I swear I've seen a stock like that that had a battery compartment for powering either an optic or a weapon mounted light though....

One of the nicest features is a self-cleaning rear sight that gives a clear sight picture after pulling it out of mud without having to clean it, as evidenced by the picture above.

Lemme guess, our Government is going to use the Colt M4 and the Germans are going to start using that HK one... Or do you think the boys in charge will actually pick this one up? Do you think some of our elite SF guys are going to start using these soon or already are. I showed my friend that was in the Army for 4 years this thread and hes foaming at the mouth as we speak. I hope H&K knows what they are about to unleash unto the world.
