    Hey All,
I'm no stranger to Glock pistols, having owned or currently own G27, G41, G30, G26, G19.
Now I have the pleasure of an inbound G42 (bought from a forum member) and am wondering what you all use for defensive ammo?

More specifically... what defensive ammo have you fired enough of to know that if feeds and functions properly in your G42?

Hoping for first hand accounts from actual users.
Thanks in advance for any input!

Mine runs perfectly on Hornady Critical Defense. I keep that in all my 380s.

Anything XTP of a good brand. I think American gunner 90 grain is in there now.

I've been experimenting with Speer Gold Dot 124gr "Short Barrel" +P in my Sig P365. Working out perfectly. See if they make it in .380.

The Underwood 380 ACP +P 90 Grain Xtreme Penetrator would be my second choice after the Plus+P 90 grain XTP but only if the XTP's wouldn't feed in my gun and the Phillip's head bullets would.

Traditionally, and with most modern ammo, the 380 isn't capable of both penetration and expansion because if a bullet expands, the expansion reduces penetration and so you have to chose between one or the other because you can't have both. But the plus+P ammo changes that equation somewhat and while the XTP JHP will expand in non-plus+P loads, it won't penetrate much. But the Plus+P will penetrate more and that gives you both expansion AND penetration.

The Underwood 380 ACP +P 90 Grain Xtreme Penetrator will penetrate even more than the XTP's but that much penetration (Beyond 14 inches) probably isn't needed but Underwood also offers a lighter 65 grain fluted copper bullet that they call the "Defender" for people who are afraid of over-penetration. The Phillips-head ammo doesn't expand but is supposed to have some kind of magic because of the dramatic effect the fluted bullets have on gelatin.

So my first choice would be the Underwood plus +P XTP's but my second choice if that ammo didn't feed in my gun would be the Underwood 90 grain penetrators because I'd rather have too much penetration than not enough, and I'd still prefer a 90 grain bullet at 1200 fps than the usual 900 fps of standard FMJ loads and maybe get a little xtra bonus from the magic of the Phillips head bullet.

Another vote for Underwood 90gr XTP +P. Underwood 90gr Gold Dot +P is pretty good also.

Federal HST. 99 grain, I think. Excellent stuff that is as good or better than anything else.

My rule of thumb, if your caliber of choice is offered in HST start doing your homework. That said I’m aware 380 SD ammo doesn’t seem as prevalent as it’s larger counterparts.

My choice is the Speer Gold Dot in most calibers, but GD and HST are seldom the wrong choice.

I carry Lehigh factory 90 grain Xtreme Penetrators in my Glock 42. I have shot them through mixed media consisting of pork ribs, blue jeans and ballistic gelatin, and I got 12 inches of gel penetration after going trough the ribs and jeans and 14 inches after going through the jeans material but missing the ribs/meat entirely. I call that barrier blind yet not overpenetrating.

I also shot Buffalo Bore standard pressure hard cast at the same setup and got complete penetration of 15 inches of gel with rounds being stopped at the jeans/ribs packages on the backside.

I don't see the need for +P versions of either round.

Factory Gold Dots fired at the the same media pretty much exploded on hitting bone and had very shallow penetration.

I have linked videos of these tests many times in the past, and hate to be redundant. They can be found with a search.

Federal HST 99-grain. Very good results in the Lucky Gunner gel tests, both in terms of penetration and consistent expansion. Shoots well through my 42, although my testing was cut short by the quarantine so can't talk about long-term reliability for function.

This. I keep +p Xtp Hollowpoints in the gun and a reload with extreme penetrators in it.
    Flawless performance.
