While loading the mags on my GLOCK 34 I noticed that I can put 18 rounds in them. These are the standard mags that came with the gun. Not complaining, just thought it was odd.

Anyone else able to do this?

Yep. Most of my 17/34 mags hold 18 rounds.

filling the magazine beyond capacity will wear out the spring faster.

+1. I definitely wouldn't load beyond 17. They're designed to only accomodate 17 for a reason. If you want more rounds, you can always add a +2 extension or get a G18 mag.

While it may work, I would not recommend it as it wasn't designed to function with that many rounds. Besides possible spring damage, you run the risk of causing feeding problems. I have observed overloaded magazines have feeding problems that they otherwise don't have.
