My wife has a little trouble racking the slide on her 27. Is there anything that I could do to lessen the strength needing without affecting the performance of the gun?

No. It might be dangerous to go to a lighter recoil spring. Just have her lock the slide back before inserting a magazine.

For some reason I find the thumb and forefinger slide grip and rack uncomfortable. I use an overhand slide grip to rack the slide. It goes like this: I place the weak hand over the slide grasping it with the palm and fingers just aft of the ejection port. It is then easy to push forward with the strong hand which is on the gun grip and pull aft with the weak hand. Just make sure to keep the ejection port clear. You don't want the round to fail to eject and have the primer struck by the ejector upon letting the slide go.

    Hope this helps.
