Can OfficerChris or Horror or someone else interpret the writings? Just got it for Christmas from an old time German cop. I know it involves East Germany but I don't know the purpose of the medal. I tried a couple of those translation apps but it returned gibberish.

I seem to remember this image of the East German border guard jumping over the fence to escape to West Germany during the construction of the Berlin Wall/Cold War featured in Life Magazine or one of those magazines from the 1960s.

The first one says "Made for the protection [or defense] of the workers and farmers".

    Working on the second one...

The second one I can't make much sense out of... sorry. I didn't study my German hard enough in school.

Between the image of the border guard and the writing, I think this medal was mocking the East Germany regime or Communism or something. Maybe in it's day, even possessing one on the wrong side of the Iron Curtain would have gotten you a long term stay at Stallag 13 or something.

its "Bestenermittlung in Körperertüchtigung und Sport"

    competition in exercise and sport.

"Für den Schutz der Arbeiter- und Bauern-Macht."

For workers and farmers protection (public protection)

looks like an East-German Army Medal. You can see the East-German emblem on the second picture.

I think it's closer to "for the protection of the worker and farmer, power".

I don't think the last word is a conjugation of machen (to make). Macht is power or might.

I can't read all of the second. OP - could you just type it out, I'm on my wife's netbook and the screen is tiny.

Yeah, but the practice of calling someone a name of an animal is unheard of here. German insults are confusing to us. I know about them, but here if you were to call someone a dirty little pig or a dog, they'd be like "OK". Much better here to rip into someone with a sting of profanities and say that their mother is fat, a prostitute, etc.

If you have a chance - for a good bit of american culture, google some "yo momma" joke sites. Like "yo momma so stupid she sits on the TV and watches the couch" etc.

Yo momma so stupid, she takes 2 hours to watch 60 minutes. (For Horror, 60 minutes is the name of a news show which runs for... 60 minutes)

Yo momma so stupid, she takes an hour to cook Minute Rice. (For Horror, Minute Rice is a brand of instant rice that is supposed to cook... in minutes)

Yo momma so fat, she got her own zip code. (For Horror, zip codes are used by the Postal Service to designate geographical areas for mail delivery, generally it covers about 4 square miles to 8 square miles here, depending on population density.

Yo momma teeth so black, she drinks water and spits out coffee. (For Horror, American water is clear and coffee is black)
