I was told the other day that the new Gen 4 Glocks are so different from the other Glocks, that a lot of the old parts won't fit the Gen 4 guns, including the magazines. Is this true or was this guy just spouting off ?
He was a S&W M&P shooter, and might have been trying to discourage someone from buying the Glock.
I know I can get the straight scoop on this Forum....

From what I have read any Glock magazine will work in a 4th Gen as long as you dont move the mag release to other side

    What he said.

However, if you switch the mag release to the other side, you'll have to use the newest (9th) generation Glock magazine.

It is (the mag) notched on both sides so the mag release will hold it no matter which side the mag release is on.

Disclaimer: Magazine generations are a generic term and have not been codified by Glock.

    Gen 1-4 = pre-'94 ban
    Gen 5-6 = during the '94 ban
    Gen 7-9 = post-'94 ban
    Gen 8 = ambi-mag release cut mag
    Gen 9 = reversable & ambi-mag release cut mag

Maybe, if we beg/cajole/bribe Butch, he can take an updated pic showing all nine.

It is partially true. Several internal parts such as recoil spring, connector, connector housing, grip hole plug, slide and some others, are different and not interchangeable.
The barrel, Glock says is not interchangeable, I say it is and plan to prove so next time I go to the range. The magazines are interchangeable as long as the release is in the normal position, in the LH position it requires ambidextrous magazines.

I don't see why anyone, with any sense, would buy a Glock pistol for self defense when there's no way to tell if the gun you just happen to get, will work with the 2 mags supplied with it. If someone can read and believe this thread, he is stupid to buy a Glock pistol.

Forget buying spares, they probably won't work in your particular pistol, anyway. This whole topic should be embarrassing to someone by now, you would think.

    Quiet
has posted a pic of 8 different mag configurations and that's just for the 9mm full size.

    Take your chances.

I have three Gen4 pistols and a bunch of older magazines. I lost nothing by buying the new pistols, all the magazines work. I gained the ability to flip the magazine release to the opposite side if I want to; I don't, I am not a lefty.

Hopefully it'll be here in just a couple weeks.....

In the mean time, I did modify tampashooter's pic a little:
