I am going to be buying my first handgun next month. I have had some experience shooting the G27 and I have narrowed my choice down to the G30 or G21. It will be a CCW and vehicle weapon. I have been told by some people that my first handgun should be a full size auto, and from others that I should go with the gun I want and that I am comfortable with. My only concern about the G30 is the recent FTRTB issues. Which do you think I should buy?

    Thanks

Of your choices for concealed carry, I'd go with the Glock 30 or Glock 30SF. I have the 30sf myself and it's my favorite off duty LEO weapon. Being your a new shooter, you may want to consider the Glock 19 9mm. You will find 9mm ammo much cheaper then .45 Cal ammo. The more ammo you buy, the more you can shoot. The 9mm is easy to conceal with the right holster and a fine defensive pistol with the right ammo.
Bottom line, get the one you want, shoot it and carry it.

Well, try them both out if you can and see which one you like best.

If you plan to CCW the weapon, the G30 is the ticket. You can always use G21 magazines for backup if you want.

Yep, I was going to say this, but it's succinctly here ^.

Ive had a G30 for about 10 years. Great gun, but it's about as large as i'd want to CCW/duty gun. The rare occasions I'm in uniform, a 21 is great, but it's just a little large under a sports coat or concealed.

I have both but my G30 will out shoot ANY of my other Glocks.

    This.

While I am a BIG fan of the .45 acp, Randy makes a lot of sense about the G19.
It's physical size is close to the G30, and 9mm ammo is less expensive than .45 acp, and that means for the same money, you can get more practice.
(And with the 'right' ammo, the 9mm is a very potent self defense round.)

With that said, I've got all three of the mentioned Glocks.
    G21, G30SF and the G19.
The most accurate of the three is a toss-up between the G30SF and the G19.
Both are capable of shooting out the X-Ring at 15 yards.

I would definitely go with the G30. Concealable, low recoil, very accurate. To my knowledge, there has never been a FRTB problem with the G30; just with the G30 SF.

Well, you can't make the 21 any smaller, but you can do this to the 30:

For years I've used a G27 for concealed carry. Then I got a 21sf mostly for home defense and a few IDPA matches. That got me thinking a G30sf might make a good carry gun -but after owning one for a almost a year it never got the nudge over the G27.

So for me it comes down to being realistic on how you can conceal carry the gun. If you're sure you can comfortably go with a G30/30sf then get one -but if its only gonna get carried in a car or serve as a home gun then I'd pick a 21/21sf (and so I did, 3 of em in fact)

The G30 is pretty sweet, and you can't make the G21 smaller.

    Go with the G30.

I'd say go with the standard 30, if it fits your hands. No FTRB issues to worry about. If you want a carry gun, it's the only way to go.

I have a G21SF and absolutely love the fit feel and ergonomics of the gun. Its a soft shooter and hits its mark everytime. My vote is obvious.

I have both the 21, and 30. Both are top, top, notch weapons. For CCW, hands down go with the 30, over the 21.
The 21 is larger, only marginally, but, when it comes to carrying for long periods of time, the smaller stature of the 30 is noticeably more comfortable. Having 4 different carry firearms, one, in my humble opinion, is the best, and that's my G30!

I carry the 21SF concealed and have no problems. Granted the G30 is smaller but doesn't hold 13+1 rounds in it which is why I went for the larger weapon. The heavier, longer barrel helps keep me on target between quick shots. I'm not knocking the 30, it's a great weapon but it's simply personal preference. I'm a bigger guy and choose the bigger gun, period.

I have a 21 and 36 but I would love to have a 30 too. I do very well with the 21 shooting but I can't honestly say it is a joy to CC. I can and have carried the 21 concealed but after a few hours I was missing my 36. :dunno:

I love the G21 and the .45 acp round for self defense but as you wrote you are looking for a ccw, I would go with the G30. If the FTRTB is a concern for you, stick with the G30 and stay away from the G30 SF. There seemed to be less issues with them.
