I have the 23 in gens 3 and 4. They both have their benefits. Gen 3 has an arguably more reliable rsa, a single flat-wire spring more conducive to operation in sandy environments, and slightly better trigger. The gen 4 for its better (to some) texturing and easier-to-reach mag release. Actually shooting both side by side it's hard to tell a difference but I give the slightest nod to the gen 3.

I have a very good friend that is a former ATF agent. He lives in MS. so I don't get to visit him as much as I would like to. I also have a son that is 30 years old. Like dad, he has always chose S&W firearms over any other brand. There was that one time we both bought a Glock G17.4. I sold mine because I could not get comfortable with the grip ergonomics. He sold his to fund a new S&W FS 2.0 .40 cal.
Just recently my son and I went to my aforementioned friends house to shoot at his indoor range. Long story short, my son was shooting my friends Glock G23's, Gen 1-4. Now he wants one! He sold his M&P 2.0 .40 cal. to my friend. My friend also told him he can get him an almost excellent-very very good LE trade in G23 in either Gen 3 or 4. He has to decide. My friend explained the differences between the 3 & 4 to him, the Gen 4's extra mag., new RSA, etc. He advised my son to go with the Gen 4. But, here's the kicker; I "MIGHT" be buying one as well! At the prices my friend can get them at, I would be foolish NOT to get one. He's an FFL, so no fees.
Which Gen would "YOU" select, and why?
One more thing; Are you sitting down? He has a Class 3/SOT (?) license. He also owns a G18 AND a G18C! Those are some bad "BLEEP, BLEEP, BLEEP" guns!!!!!! :alex:

Every time I shoot with LEO's, several will invariably mention that they are interested in the G23/.40, and, after shooting mine, will get one.

Only gen 4 I own is a g21. Everything else is a gen3. My g23 in odgreen has been great and super reliable. I carry 165gr hst.

I got my first Glock from my step son several years ago and it was a G23/3. I love the gun but I’m not a small guy so part of my hand comes below the grip limiting the purchase I get. So it’s always surprising how snappy it is when I shoot. I know I should get the mag extender but just never have.

Gen 4 is better. Just saw them at Academy on 12-26-17 for $499.

I would recommend the Gen.4 because when all the gun companies were in the race to get the new .40 S&W to market, Glock made it there first by tooling out the already existing G17 (9mm). When Glock made the Gen.4 they beefed up the frame with the .40 cal. in mind. Much better gun when talking about the .40 and you've got the adjusting back-straps for grip size.

My best all around Glock is my 2nd gen G-23, I don't like the finger grooves on the agenda 3-4 mid size Glocks.

I own the G-42 through G-22 .380/9mm/.40 series Glocks (mini to full size) and if I was limited to just one, I would have to chose that G-23.

I recently purchased a G23 2nd gen. I too am not a fan of the finger grooves. The capacity and compact size makes it a great backup to the G35 I carry as primary.

Carried a G23.2 from '93, and then upgraded to the G23.4 when they became available.

The only Pistol GLOCK need make.

I was never cool with the addition of extra parts of the gen 4s. Gen 3 and older for me. It wasn't broken so there was no need to fix it. My G23 is well used gen 2.

I have a G23.4 for my CCW for over 10 years and probably 5K rounds through it with no malfunction. To answer your question, I'd say each gen has an advantage, and options to adapt to your shooting style and intended tactical situation. Once you define what your shooting environment is, then you can decide the best gen for you. I've tweeked: G-17.2, G21.2, G23.4, G22.2, and G19.4 MOS to personal preferance. GlockStore.com has many videos to help you decide what is available and how to take advantage of these upgrades should you want. Not everyone might like this opinion, but hey, it is America. To each their own! I spent 5 years in USAF to protect our freedom of speech. At times, we can respectfully agree to disagree. No one is forcing you to do what you don't want to do. Don't be afraid to try new things. You can always go back if you don't like the upgrade. Who knows, you might be pleased with your effort. Peace to you all.

Yes, the Glocks do not always fit the hand great in the gun shop. It's when you get to the firing range and actually shoot them when you see why they're so popular.

Which is why i now own M&P M2.0s, I will not get rid of my Glocks though. But the grip angle on the M&P M2.0 is better.

In Law Enforcement I have only carried G-22 gen.3 and G-23 gen.3. They work and I never upgraded to a Gen.4. I have purchased several through my department on the buy back program and have always got a good deal on them. Recently I just picked up a G-17 Gen. 3 and another G-22 Gen. 3 right after Thanksgiving both were under $300 each. I just could not pass them up.

Can’t comment on anything but G23 Gen 4. It is frequently my carry gun, especially in fall and winter. Probably my favorite Glock to shoot. I also own 19’s, 21’s a 43 and my new Christmas gift full size S&W 2.0 in 9mm

I forgot to mention that I always have the finger grooves removed and the grip stippled. It’s nice that you have a buddy who can get them below cost. As a retired soldier, I always buy mine blue label which helps knock down the cost

Yes, I "THINK" he got the G18 in '86 and the G18C in '89. I would very much like to take some pics of them, but ATF and FBI agents are very cautious about pictures being taken. And, I do respect them very much for being that way.
