I have a mag that has a #2 follower.
I ran across this website when trying to update my followers.
GLO-1028-5 Follower fits LE magazines (full capacity) M/22,23,24,35 and 27 nine round. Use only in magazines with flat "inside guide ribs" (also marked 40&5). Replaces all followers marked "1,2,3,4 or 5". GOL-1028-1 through GLO-1028-4 have been discontinued. Part number 33 on the Glock Schematic.
as opposed to this
GLO-1028-8 Follower Fits LE magazines M/22,23,24,27,35. Use only in magazines supplied with 6, 7 or 8 followers. GOL-1028-6 & GLO-1028-7 have been discontinued. Part number 33 on the Glock Schematic.
looks like the mag follower is specific to certain generation mags. Can someone enlighten me?
That's a #5 follower.
That's a #8 follower.
If your magazines work fine as they are, there's no real need to update to the latest follower. But for a magazine that originally came with a #2 follower, the latest one you can use in that magazine is a #5.
Standard capacity .40 magazines that came with followers 1028(#1) through #5 should only use one of those followers.
Standard capacity .40 magazines that came with followers #6 through #9 should only use one of those followers.
Though if you use a #9 follower in a magazine that came with #6 through #8, the follower may fail to rise fully in the magazine tube, and you should see a rub mark develop on the part of the follower that engages the slide stop, and you may have to shave that rub mark down until the follower rises fully in the magazine. Here's where that rub mark will develop:
