The retainer inside the slide under the sight does not look like the normal 3/16 hex but more like a slotted bolt possibly I want to change the sights to steel but don't want to mess with it until I have the info and am using the right tool. Can anyone shed some light on this subject ? Thanx in advance.

It's a plastic pop-in. Push it out and discard it; been there and done that.

My gen. 2 G21 originally had the hex screw-on standard Glock front sight.

Easy to push out with small screw driver.

The originals were reputed to be fragile and not very durable. The current plastic OEM have a good rep for ruggedness.

Some of the earlier ones were also staked. I had one like that.

Yes, just push the plastic pin out from the bottom and it will pop right off without damage. The nut driver is 3/16" but it has to be a thin walled driver. SquirelDaddy has the best ones for $5-$8. Some of the replacement sights have the screw to close to the front and standard wall drivers won't work. For really nice sights, check Dawson Precision, Taran Tactical and Heinies (the original Glock sights). There must be two dozen sight makers for Glock now, in the beginning there was only 2. All aftermarket sights come with screws, as do the newer Glocks. Night sights are no good for target or competition, too busy. Good for low light, but not no light. They don't identify targets. Dawson has a POA/POI gaurantee, they will send you a new front sight to correct. Taran makes the best fiber optic.

Just a few that I have (or had).

Another option is a dot, it's target focused.
