G19 Gen 4, with a G19 Gen 3 Frame

1346 Views 11 Replies 11 Participants Last post by  dave421
I am currently looking at getting my first handgun, and I think it's going to be a G19. I have shot both a Gen 3 and a Gen 4. One of the things that I noticed was that I liked the grip much more on the Gen 3 version. I understand that the Gen 4 has internal improvements (and I also want to buy a new gun), what I don't know is if this means that it would be impossible to put a Gen 3 Frame on a Gen 4 gun. Is this possible? Is there someplace that I just haven't been able to find online that sells an factory Gen 3 frame, or do I just completely not know what I am talking about (this is entirely possible).

Thanks for your help.

Nearly certain you can not use a gen 4 slide on a gen 3 frame.

If you like the gen 3 shape/size over the feel of the smaller gen 4, just add the medium back strap that comes with the gen 4 for the exact same size as the gen 3.

If you prefer the smoother texture of the gen 3 over the grippier gen 4, buy a gen 3.

g26own, you should go to the referenced web page, above, and insert your ZipCode to help in locating the closest Blue Label/LE dealer for your area. It's my understanding Blue Label dealers have geographically-limited sales areas.

Buying a Glock at a discount is once/year. See:

for more info.

The GSSF blue label discount card is on the same sheet that your regular membership card is on, so I think you should get it promptly. Please remember you have to go sign up for 2 years to get the blue label card. One year signups have to wait until their second year rolls around.

I'm not sure what the procedure is if there isn't a local blue label dealer. If you don't get a good reply on this thread, ask your question in this forum

I'm courious about these "Internal improvements" you sope of in the gen 4.

Do you know what these improvements do and what they will do for you?

I'm willing to bet, if you like the grip of the Gen 3, then you will pick up a gen 3, walk out on the range and blast away, then ask yourself, "What else could I need and what the heck are those internal improvements for anyway?"

I have a safe full (well, not quite full) of gen 3's and no desire to own a gen 4.

My advice is to shoot them both, first. (You may want them both).

It is NOT impossible to cross gen 3 and gen 4 parts. HOWEVER, it WOULD be cost prohibitive to make parts to fit. And really, why would ya want to.

You have answered your question. Get the gen 3 since it feels better to you.

The ONLY internal improvement was the RSA. BUT, the gen 3 RSA cost what, a wooping 5 dollars......And you will have had the pistol for many years and many thousands of rounds before it will need to be replaced.

You will shoot better what feels good to you in your hand. Get gen 3 if that feels best.

There's not really any "internal improvements" to the Gen 4 guns. The dual spring RSA is technically better but offers little advantage in the real world and is negated by the extra bump on the Gen 4 trigger bar that makes the trigger slightly worse IMO. That said, I prefer the Gen 4 guns for the better grip. If the only reason you preferred the Gen 3 was the way it fit your hand, you can simply add the smallest backstrap that comes with the Gen 4 gun to make it the same size/fit as the Gen 4. You'll also get an extra mag with the Gen 4 that partially makes up for the slight cost increase.
