Checking the safe and realized I have a bunch of large carry guns that hardly ever see the light of day. Usually pack a G27 when I can wear a shirt over my waist. Depending on the pants/ or shorts I can even pack it in a pocket holster. My G19 is awesome but hasnt been carried or shot in ages. Have enough to spring for an LCP cash, but really want that Smith 638. Would you trade a semi auto for an airweight revolver or am I just nuts?

Whether you trade or just use cash is up to you.

But my personal opinion is that a S&W airweight .38 snubbie is a great gun. My wife has the 637 and I have the 642 :)

A 19 is far easier to shoot fast and accurately than any J frame (I've owned a couple dozen of the latter). The double action pull on a J is particularly difficult to master. And Glock sights are superior to J sights.

A 19 is relatively easy to carry concealed (except in a pocket), so I don't see what you gain by going for the 638.

If it's never going to be used trade it.

depends on your needs....you have a G27, it will do the same thing as a G19, a J frame snubby .38 should be on your list....

Personally, I never get rid of any guns...

Keep the 19 and get the snubbie. You'll regret trading it in a year or so.

The 638 is a LOT easier to carry concealed than the G19. Other than at the cylinder, the 638 is a lot thinner and a lot lighter, and is rounded at the top near the grip, as opposed to how the Glock Slide sticks up there when carried.

Yes, the Glock has a better DA trigger, more rounds, better sights, and less recoil for comparable rounds.

But the 638 is easier to carry :)

Is Smith still running a $50 rebate on the 642? If so, I can buy one at Larry's in Huntsville for $299 pre-tax. That's a great deal, IMO.

Keep the 19 and buy the snubbie. Have both myself and carry the snubbie (642 or SP-101) far more frequently. The 19 is a great pistol though and I would imagine you'd regret it at some point.

What holster are you using? If I don't ankle carry in an Uncle Mike's ankle holster, I have been using an Alabama Holster pocket holster for my 442.

I would never get rid of a G19 for anything...but i would save my bucks and buy a snubbie...another idea Bud's has a 90 day layaway plan just pay 20% down and 3 months to pay it out. I don't know you but i would hate to see you get rid of one of the best 9's made. Man if i had done this i would have some fine guns i traded off..Now Regret

Also i will never carry a snubbie alone things are becoming crazy around here...daylight seems no issue for crimes no more...i'm afraid if the economy gets even worse Bad will get Worse...
    Good Luck, David

    I have 3 Alabama "off-side" holsters :)

    1 for my 642, 1 for my wife's 637, and 1 for my G26.

The values are pretty close, so if I had other guns filling the same job as the 19 and the J-frame would fill other CCW needs, I wouldn't hesitate to trade.

However, you have enough to buy a new Ruger LCP? That's about a $300 gun - why can't you buy a used J frame for that or not much more?
